MacBook Pro 16 inch owners report MagSafe Charging and External Monitor issues

While it is often expected that brand new hardware will experience some issues, Apple's new 16-inch MacBook Pro is not immune to this phenomenon; two separate problems have been reported that affect the MacBook Pro's ability to charge while completely shut down and reliably use an external monitor. Two separate issues have been reported that affect.

The charging issue was first reported on Reddit and a video is attached. Upon complete shutdown, the MagSafe charger flashes orange, indicating that it is not charging properly.

Apparently Apple is aware of the problem and is currently investigating, but in the meantime, they have some suggestions as to what affected users can do: charge the laptop while it is in sleep mode, charge the MacBook Pro with the lid open, and oddly things, plugging in the MagSafe cable before shutting down the computer. Other users in this thread report that charging via USB-C also works.

External monitor issues, while unlikely to ruin your day, can still be frustrating; according to Apple Insider, for many users, including commenters, the external screen attached to the new MacBook Pro, not always activate after opening and closing the laptop lid, they said. It is unclear if this is an issue only with the new M1 Macs or if it is related to macOS Monterey.

Both of these problems are no doubt frustrating, but pale in comparison to the problems faced by some owners of the original M1 MacBook Air and Pro laptops. Two class action lawsuits were filed after a number of users noticed their screens cracking without warning during shutdown.

Compared to the high price of screen replacement, having to reconnect the monitor and charge it via USB-C for a while doesn't seem quite so dramatic, but all the same, we hope that both of these issues will be fixed soon. At least three new displays are reportedly in development for 2022, including a Pro XDR unit that may incorporate custom silicon.
