According to several leaked information about Samsung's upcoming flagship phone, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will receive several camera upgrades, and the base and Plus models will receive build quality improvements.
Let's start with the Galaxy S22 Ultra's camera. From the rumors so far, it appears that nothing has changed in the Ultra's camera compared to the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The Galaxy S22 Ultra will take on the mighty iPhone 13 Pro Max and the Google Pixel 6 Pro to take the top spot on our Best Cameras list. These upgrades will be necessary if the Galaxy S22 Ultra is to challenge the mighty iPhone 13 Pro Max and Google Pixel 6 Pro for the top spot on our best camera phone list.
One possible example of such software is what the source of the leak, Ice Universe, describes as an "AI image quality enhancement mode." They claim that this mode "can make 108MP [photos] better in detail, color, and brightness" compared to the default images taken with the 108MP main camera that the Galaxy S22 Ultra is supposed to use. This was mentioned in more general terms in an earlier tweet, and now they claim to have seen samples of images using this enhanced mode. Sadly, they will not be sharing these.
Meanwhile, the Korean site ITMaterial found code referring to a "detail enhancer" feature. That article provides a string containing this name, but does not say where it was obtained from. Our guess is that it is the newly updated Samsung camera app or something similar. Without more specific claims, however, we would be wary of believing this rumor.
It is possible that both ITMaterial and Ice Universe are talking about the same feature with different wording. However, ITMaterial also suggests that the Detail Enhancer could effectively be a macro shooting mode like that found on the iPhone 13 series ultra-wide lenses. Either way, it would make good use of the oversized resolution of Samsung's 108MP camera.
But Ice Universe did not end with the S22 leak. They now claim that all three Galaxy S22 models will have glass backs.
While this is not a surprise for the Galaxy S22 Ultra, it was unexpected for the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus. The Galaxy S21 made the controversial move to a plastic back.
Previous Ice Universe tweets speculated that the Galaxy S22 Ultra might use a new "bio-based" material for the back panel. However, after making the latest claims, these tweets have now been deleted.
In addition to the above, there are many other interesting rumors about the Galaxy S22. The chipset powering the phone could be either the recently announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Samsung's own new Exynos 2200, depending on the market where the phone is purchased.
The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus are expected to have slightly smaller bodies and screens than the S21, while the S22 Ultra will instead be wider and more square. This is probably to subsidize the pointed-tip S Pen stylus built into the Ultra model, a move that would completely replace the Galaxy S22 Ultra with the currently dormant Galaxy Note series.
It probably won't be long before these phones are officially announced. The most concrete rumors say that February 8 is the date these phones will be unveiled on stage. If that's not enough, Samsung's new entry-level flagship, the Galaxy S21 FE, will likely be announced in January.
