The success of Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 has led to calls among some hardcore Apple devotees for the company to make a true iPhone flip For those waiting for the 2022 launch, it may be worth upgrading to the iPhone 13 for now It may be worth upgrading to the iPhone 13 or waiting for the iPhone 14.
A new blog post by Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) claims that Apple will not release a foldable iPhone in 2023. The news comes from MacRumors, where Ross Young, co-founder and CEO of DSCC, believes that a foldable iPhone will not appear until 2023 at the earliest, maybe even 2024. Young did not elaborate on the exact circumstances that led him and his team to this conclusion.
In an email to Tom's Guide, Young clarified that this information is "based on discussions with members of the display supply chain, which includes panel suppliers, backlight manufacturers, LED manufacturers, and other material suppliers."
The DSCC report is consistent with other analyst reports. Prominent Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said earlier this year that the iPhone foldable should not be expected until 2023. Apple leaker John Prosser also felt that a 2022 release was too optimistic for Apple. If these reports turn out to be true, Samsung will probably continue to dominate our best foldable phones list throughout the next year.
As for specs, Kuo believes the iPhone Flip will have a huge 8-inch display. However, other reports claim that Apple is working with LG to develop a 7.5-inch OLED display.
The market is growing around the foldable segment. In Samsung's case, the Z Fold 3 has recorded 40 times the sales of the Z Fold 2. This may suggest significant consumer interest in a different form factor than the sleek glass plates that have graced cell phone stores for the past decade; the Z series is not inexpensive either, with the Flip 3 starting at $999 and the Fold 3 at $1799. Perhaps the iPhone Flip will be another high-priced gadget.
Presumably, Samsung will launch the Galaxy Z Fold 4 in 2022, but there are some early rumors about what to expect. It is also expected to feature the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip.
If Apple decides to stay on the folding sidelines for another year, the company will have a better opportunity to get the category right. But it is also an opportunity for Samsung to solidify its lead in foldable.
Either way, we are excited to see greater competition in the foldable phone space, especially since the Google Pixel Fold seems to have been shelved.
