Update: The iPhone SE 3 is said to have 1.4 billion users. And that's thanks to 5G.
It appears that two new iPhone SE models may be released in the next two years. This is according to Ming-Chi Kuo, a proven and trusted analyst on all things Apple (via MacRumors).
The 2022 model, called the iPhone SE 3, is said to be coming in the first half of this year and could have 3GB of RAM, while the 2023 model is expected to have a slightly larger display and 4GB of memory.
Kuo's proposed iPhone SE launch date corresponds with earlier reports, particularly those of Ross Young. Curiously, Young claims that the 2022 iPhone SE is internally referred to as the iPhone SE Plus, even though it is said to retain the current model's design and 4.7-inch display size. That means it will undoubtedly look outdated, similar to the iPhone 8, with a Touch ID-equipped home button and thick bezels.
However, the iPhone SE 3 is said to be powered by the same powerful A15 Bionic chip as the iPhone 13, which should provide the fastest performance of the best budget phones. With this in mind, we recommend waiting for the iPhone SE 3 rather than getting the current iPhone SE.
Young said in April that the larger SE model would have a display size of roughly 5.8 inches to 6.1 inches and would appear in 2023, matching Kuo's prediction. Since then, however, the release date has reportedly been pushed back to 2024. According to Young, both SE models will support 5G connectivity.
Kuo's claims are also consistent with a recent report we covered just a week ago. According to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, Apple is preparing to launch a refreshed iPhone SE as early as Q1 2022. This period would run from January to March 31, which means it could appear before the second anniversary of the current SE model's launch (April 24).
It is also possible that one of the new SE models will feature an iPhone XR-like design, although this seems quite unlikely for the 2022 model. We previously reported that Apple may ditch the LCD display altogether after the new SE model arrives.
In the same investor note seen by MacRumors, Kuo also mentions the new AirPods Pro: Apple's new advanced wireless earbuds, named AirPods Pro 2, are reportedly scheduled to launch in Q4 2022, which coincides with the company's annual fall event.
The new AirPods Pro are expected to have an entirely new look and may get rid of the short stem found on existing earbuds; MacRumors reports that a new chip with new fitness tracking features and improved sensors It is also possible that it will be equipped with a new chip with new fitness tracking features and improved sensors.
Even excluding the new iPhone SE and AirPods 2, Cupertino could have a lot in store for 2022: according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the entry-level MacBook Pro 2022, MacBook Air 2022, a high-end iMac, and a revamped Mac mini, Apple may have an extensive product library in the works.
Garman also hinted at three new Apple Watch models, one of which could be an all-new "rugged" smartwatch targeted at athletes and outdoor sports professionals. There is also the possibility of a "new iPad Pro design with wireless charging, plus updates to the iPad Air and entry-level iPad."
Most notably, Apple's first headset that mixes augmented and virtual reality, also known as Apple VR.
