Some iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 commuters are experiencing problems using hands-free Bluetooth in their cars. The issue appears to be limited to those who have updated to iOS 15.1.
As reported by 9to5Mac in an Apple support thread, new iPhone users using the latest version of Apple's iOS operating system, including 15.1.1, are experiencing disconnected calls. Calls tend to disconnect between two and eight minutes after they are initiated.
"I have the same problem with dropped calls. I have a 2017 Tundra and an iPhone 12 with 15.1.1," user Tundra_2017 posted on the Apple forums." The only workaround I have found is to connect a USB cable from the truck to the phone."
The issue appears to be limited to cars that are not running Apple Car Play and instead use an in-car infotainment system. For some users, this issue did not occur with the iPhone X.
"Spent an hour on the phone with Apple today. I uploaded the diagnostic results from my phone. They told me to call Verizon. Huh?" User Jon55nj posted. 'Bluetooth has nothing to do with Verizon. I should have returned it right away when the problem started, but I figured there was no reason it couldn't be resolved right away, I wanted my X back."
At this point, the easiest solution seems to be to use a USB cable and forgo Bluetooth altogether. [As of this writing, no Apple representative has replied to this thread. Users have also been unable to find a solution other than using a USB cable for the time being.
A problem similar to this did not come up in our iOS 15 review. But as with any new operating system update, there are only so many permutations that Apple testers can get through. Really, many of these minor bugs will be squashed when the operating system hits the real world. Until then, users may have to wait for the next iOS incremental update for a permanent fix.
