The Google Pixel 6 had a bit of a rough launch, with screen flickering issues, battery drain, and other bugs seemingly affecting the phone. Thankfully, one of the more serious issues, ghost calls to random contacts, has now been fixed.
This is according to the Pixel community manager on the r/GooglePixel subreddit, who explains that updating to the latest version of the Google app (12.43.18 or higher) will fix this issue.
This particular issue was one of the more annoying Pixel flaws, with users finding that their devices would randomly call contacts at all hours of the day. Initially, the only solution seemed to be to disable the "Hey Google" setting, which apparently means that one cannot voice call the Google Assistant.
One Reddit user claimed that he woke up to find that his phone was on a call with a contact he had never called before. The phone's screen remained off and Google Assistant apparently did not receive the wake-up command.
Fortunately, a fix has already been distributed and users should be able to reactivate Google Assistant at any time. When I checked my Pixel 6 Pro, the Google app was automatically updated to version 12.44.23.29. This means that Google Assistant no longer randomly calls my contacts every time I turn my back.
You can see which version of the Google app your phone is running by going to the Google Play Store and tapping the "What's New" arrow. The version number will then appear in the "App Info" section at the bottom of the screen. Of course, as with any app, if an update is available, it will appear as such at the top of the screen.
Keeping all apps up to date along with the phone is always a good idea, but in this case, Google Assistant fans don't have much choice. Apparently, that won't come until the Pixel's December update.
All ongoing Google Pixel 6 issues can be found here. In the meantime, Pixel 6 owners are encouraged to optimize their phones by enabling or disabling all of these features.
