The revived iMac Pro will become a beast of a computer - if it exists

Update: According to recent reports, the iMac 27-inch will not actually have a mini LED display. The next all-in-one Apple desktop will stick with LCD panels. Apple introduced a new-look 24-inch iMac with an M1 chip earlier this year, but the 27-inch model remained the same. However, according to one leaker, Apple's all-in-one announcement could come under a brand name we thought was long overdue.

The iMac Pro was discontinued earlier this year, but according to leaker @dylandkt, Apple may revive the brand to distinguish this new iMac from the colorful 24-inch model. The smaller iMacs are powered by the M1 chip, and this new version will reportedly come in M1 Pro and M1 Max variants, like the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

"Why this name? To make it easier to distinguish this device from the iMac 24," tweeted the leaker, who boasts an enviable 75% accuracy rate on AppleTrack. "This is a 'Pro' device with a Pro chip," he explained, noting that the 24-inch iMac matches the M1 MacBook Air, while the new iMac will mirror the larger MacBook Pro.

"The same reasoning applies to this Pro iMac. It's the same M1 Pro and M1 Max," he continued." There may be additional configurations, but I can't say for sure at this time."

However, that does not mean that the iMac Pro is branded. Dylanddkt wrote, "But as a disclaimer, the marketing team can change gears very quickly."

Dylanddkt's original tweet has a lot more material. Although the screen size was not disclosed, Leeker said this will replace the 27-inch iMac, and that the display will use mini-LED technology and Apple's ProMotion technology for 120 Hz refresh rates.

The design will likely be similar to the 24-inch iMac and Pro Display XDR, but if Apple is really treating this as a Pro device, the playful colors will be removed. The only thing Dylandkt has stated in this regard is that it will feature a "dark bezel". No word on whether there will be a notch, but Face ID has reportedly been tested ("but not confirmed").

Dylandkt also claims to have information on three new external displays from Apple, one of which is a massive 32 inches with custom silicon.

The Pro design continues to the included ports. The leaker claims that there will be a USB-C port, an SD card slot, an Ethernet port on the power brick, and for the first time, an HDMI port. He says, "HDMI has never been on an iMac (that I know of). So why is it on this iMac? It has to do with display compatibility. Most TVs and external displays have HDMI. It's simply for convenience."

Along with the M1 Pro and M1 Max, the base model iMac Pro will have 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, with prices likely to start at "$2,000+."

If the leaker is correct, this rumored iMac Pro would appear in the first half of 2022. Perhaps it will appear at the rumored March event.
