By late 2022, it may finally be easier to find desirable gaming technologies like the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080.
At least, according to an interview with AMD CEO Lisa Su conducted by CNBC, the great shortage of semiconductors could finally be resolved starting in the middle of next year. If that happens, it may make it easier to restock the Xbox Series X and PS5.
Suh said that the chip industry has "always gone through cycles of ups and downs where demand outstrips supply," but the AMD CEO also noted that "this time is different." Of course, Sue does not expect this change to be immediate.
According to CEO Suh, the situation will steadily improve as it takes time for manufacturing capacity to return to normal. She explained, "It could take 18 to 24 months, possibly longer, to get a new plant up and running."
However, it seems that the situation could get worse before it gets better, with Sue noting that the first half of 2022 is "likely to be tight." Su's prediction may be a bit more hopeful than previous reports, although we have heard this before, as the lack of chips means that purchasing a PS5 or Xbox Series X will probably not become easier until 2023.
Over the past two years, the global chip shortage has had a dramatic impact on the chip manufacturing industry, resulting in lower production of desirable technologies and higher prices for gaming consoles and powerful computing technologies as demand exceeds supply.
While it is difficult to predict whether all will be over soon, Sue's words give us hope that we do not have to wait years. Time will tell, of course, but we are hopeful that the winds of positive change will blow in 2022.
