Sony's PlayStation Showcase 2021 gave gamers a solid look at a number of truly great upcoming games, but none were as visceral and grotesquely grotesque as the action title Project Eve.
Developer Shift Up first revealed a sneak peek of the game in 2019, but this was the first time we got a proper look at this, its first console game.
Project Eve is a PlayStation 5 game in which the protagonist, Eve, fights to reclaim Earth after a devastating invasion. With clever, fast-paced combat and some of the most visually stunning creatures in gaming, this gruesome hack-and-slash adventure is a must-play.
Here's what we know so far about Project Eve.
ShiftUp has said almost nothing about a release date for Project Eve, but promises more information to come and says they are very grateful for the interest in the game.
However, there is almost no chance that the game will be released in 2021. In fact, it will not be released until late 2022.
Shift Up shared a very small tease in 2019 and a sneak peak of some combat in November 2020, while Project Eve received its first official gameplay trailer at Sony's PlayStation Showcase 2021.
The trailer acknowledged the outrageous gameplay and deep dive into the visuals that we can expect when it finally appears.
The first half of the trailer gives a few hints about the game's story, while the second half leans heavily on introducing the terrifying creatures we will be fighting.
We also get glimpses of gameplay outside of combat, such as the many weapons Eve can use and scenes of her sliding through narrow tunnels and dodging obstacles.
Shift Up previously released a teaser trailer for the game in 2019, which can be seen below.
Project Eve takes place in the not-too-distant future, on an Earth left devastated by invaders known as NA:tives. Players take on the role of Eve, the sole survivor of the paratroopers, as they fight off the enemy, join up with new friends, and work to reclaim the Earth.
Not much is currently known about Project Eve's story, but the trailer above shows religious overtones and a great deal of mayhem that suggests that saving the planet is going to be a hell of a lot of work.
Project Eve appears to blend elements of various other popular games, which is no bad thing. The huge bosses and strategic combat feel borrowed from Dark Souls, while the over-the-top tone and flamboyance feel borrowed from Devil May Cry and Bayonetta.
Players will fight enemies in intense and challenging confrontations that require mastery of the game's systems of attack, defense, counter, and evasion. Learning attack patterns is paramount, but learning to balance attack and defense and exploit openings is also important.
Shift-up makes it clear that you can expect weaving combos and special moves that can be acquired through parry and evasion, giving you cool skills like super armor, blocking enemy combos, or a wide range of attacks like leaping thrusts and swinging.
But combat will not be the only focus. There are also bits and pieces of footage showing off interactive navigation, such as Eve swinging from a telephone pole to cross a gap or sliding through a tunnel while avoiding obstacles. In short, the game seems to merge multiple styles of gameplay into one cohesive experience.
Project Eve also utilizes dual-sense haptic feedback, making the game's brutal combat more immersive. Meanwhile, the acquisition of cosmetics will give players a sense of personalization.
There is no doubt that "Project Eve" will garner a great deal of attention as its release approaches. With familiar combat, disturbing creatures, and a cool protagonist, there are plenty of reasons to get excited.
It's unfortunate that there is no release date in sight, but hopefully we won't have to wait too long to see the fascinating chaos that Shift Up is creating.
