Leaked information on the iPhone 13 line has been brought to light not by the phone model, but by one of the cases users may end up purchasing to protect their new iPhones.
Case maker Innocent (via Slovakian site Svetapple) has revealed a case that is said to be compatible with the iPhone 13 lineup. When accessory makers start creating such designs weeks before the scheduled iPhone release date, that's the moment when all the leaks start to become real.
As we can see from the iPhone 12 Pro housed in this new case, the iPhone 13 could have a much larger camera module (as seen in the allegedly previously leaked photos), even if the lens placement still looks the same.
The extra space in the camera block is believed to allow Apple to add a larger sensor, a new lens to the ultrawide camera, and sensor shift stablization to the main camera. Sensor shift was seen on last year's iPhone 12 Pro Max, and is rumored to be on all four iPhone 13 models this year.
As the dimensions on the images indicate, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max cameras are approximately 78 mm (0.3 inches) larger diagonally than the iPhone 12 Pro camera and may be a little over half a centimeter (0.2 inches) larger than the iPhone 12 Pro Max camera
However, the size increase for the iPhone 13 and 13 mini appears to be only 0.27 cm (0.1 inch). This may be due to Apple's changes to the sensor placement, which no longer needs to be as large as the non-Pro models. we have seen rumors that the iPhone 13's rear camera will be placed diagonally, rather than vertically as on the iPhone 12.
This also applies to the size of the lens glass. All iPhone 13 devices appear to be larger by several inches, but again the largest change appears to be between the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro, with a difference of 3.8 mm (0.1 inch).
One of the most visible changes on the front of the iPhone 13 is said to be a significantly smaller Face ID notch; based on measurements by Innocent, the notch may be 25% or more smaller. This is accomplished by moving the top speaker into the body of the phone above the front sensor, rather than in a straight line as seen on all notched iPhones since the iPhone X.
With the iPhone 12 series notch height of 3.45 cm When compared to the iPhone 12 series, the difference is obvious. However, the width of the notch appears to remain the same, which may disappoint fans looking for a more dramatic change.
Innocent also notes that the case may have been designed for thicker iPhones overall; compared to the iPhone 12 Pro case, the new iPhone 13 Pro case is 1 mm thicker. This could just be a design difference, but since the iPhone 13 series adds an improved 5G and a larger battery, and the Pro model is also said to have a 120 Hz display, perhaps Apple needed the extra space to fit everything.
Also, checking the case from the side reveals that the power and volume buttons, as well as the alert slider, come 6.2 mm (0.2 inches) down the side. This could be an ergonomic change to make room for new components within the phone or to make it easier for users to access these buttons with one hand.
Apple typically releases a new iPhone every September. One analyst correctly cites the third week of September, which means that the iPhone 13 may be less than a month away from its debut.
