Update: Yellowstone's prequel, 1883, will begin soon.
The Yellowstone prequel is saddling up its first cast member. Sam Elliott, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw will join the cast of Yellowstone: 1883, a spin-off of the hit Western drama on the Paramount Network.
The flagship series is set on the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, run by sixth-generation patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner). The ranch is the largest contiguous ranch in the United States and is still being settled, a place where ranchers, local Native American tribes, and business interests collide. Season 4 of "Yellowstone" is scheduled to air this fall.
Yellowstone's prequel, also produced by Taylor Sheridan, is a caustic tale of the western frontier. Set in 1883, the Dutton family embarks on a journey to the West in search of a better future in America's untamed promised land.
McGraw and Hill, married country singers, play James and Margaret Dutton, the family's patriarch and matriarch. Elliott, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in "A Star is Born," plays Shea Brennan, a tough cowboy with a past of great sorrow.
Hill, who has appeared in films such as The Stepford Wives, shared the news of her casting on Instagram. 'Wait, you've never seen anything like this!' she wrote in the caption.
McGraw ("Country Strong," "Tomorrowland") expressed in his Instagram video that he was "excited to finally share this."
In a statement, Elliott said, "It all starts with the script, and Taylor Sheridan is an amazing writer. I think the western genre speaks clearly to both of us. Man versus man, nature versus nature, and the struggle with ourselves; it's all there in 1883, and I'm honored to be a part of it."
More casting news will follow.
"Yellowstone: 1883" is just one of two spin-offs of the original series. The other is 6666, which focuses on the Four Six Ranch in West Texas.
