"Russian Doll" Season 2 is set to air, and star Natasha Lyonne will be making a few new friends, including new cast members Annie Murphy of "Schitt's Creek" and Sharlto Copley of "District 9."
It seems like a lifetime ago that Lyonne was repeating the same day over and over in an endless time loop. Netflix renewed the dark drama a few months after its February 2019 premiere, but since then the Russian Doll front has been mostly quiet.
But the best news came in February: Murphy is joining the cast. Yes, Season 2 of Russian Doll is becoming a bit Alexis.
"Russian Doll" follows Nadia, a game developer, as she repeats the same conversation with the same friends at her 36th birthday party. When Nadia dies, she restarts from the same point in the event. As Nadia investigates what is happening to her, she discovers that a man named Alan (Charlie Barnett) is also experiencing a time loop. The two team up to explore how they are connected and how they can help each other break free.
Here's what we know so far about Russian Doll Season 2.
Netflix has not yet announced a release date for Russian Doll Season 2. However, according to Deadline, the show is currently in production.
In retrospect, season 1 began filming in February 2018 and premiered a year later. Season 2 could follow a similar timeline, but a bit later due to the difficulties of filming during the pandemic. The premiere of "Russian Doll" Season 2 is estimated to be in the spring of 2022.
Since "Russian Doll" Season 2 is currently filming, set photos have been leaked all over the place. Some of the most recent ones show Lyonne playing opposite Murphy, with Murphy sporting a truly fantastic feathered hairstyle (probably a wig).
In others, Murphy wears a plastic face shield. Whether that is part of her Russian doll costume or a precautionary measure by Covid between takes, remains to be seen.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but it is likely that lead actress Natasha Lyonne (who is also a co-creator) will return for "Russian Doll" season 2 as coder Nadia Vrbokov.
Along with Lyonne, Charlie Barnett may return as Alan Zaveri.
Other season 1 cast members who may return include Greta Lee as Nadia's friend Maxine and Yul Vazquez as Nadia's ex-boyfriend, John Reyes.
"Russian Doll" Season 2 adds Emmy Award winner Annie Murphy, who played Alexis Rose in "Shits Creek." Murphy also appeared in AMC's series "Kevin Can F*ck Himself". Details of Murphy's character are being withheld.
Another new cast member is South African actor Sharlto Copley, known for his roles in "District 9," "Elysium" and "Maleficent." Also making a guest appearance in Season 2 is Tony Award nominee Ephraim Sykes, who appeared in "Hamilton". Neither of their roles have been identified.
No details of the "Russian Doll" season 2 storyline have been teased, hinted at, or told by co-creators Natasha Lyonne, Leslie Headland, and Amy Poehler.
However, Headland previously told Thrillist that the show was planned as a three-season story. However, Lyon added that since season one will stand alone, the other seasons could go in different directions." Certainly there are additional things we would like to explore, if it makes sense to do so," she explained.
"Some of my ideas are pretty far out of this world, exactly. If "Russian Doll" Season 2 does not continue to follow the thread of Nadia and Alan, it may pick up the thread of an entirely new character trapped in a time loop--perhaps one played by Murphy.
