The official reveal trailer for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which was announced during E3 2021 as part of the Ubisoft Forward showcase, gave us an idea of what to expect from a next-generation Avatar game. At this stage, we don't know exactly what kind of game it will be, but it looks like it will be along the lines of Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed Valhalla" action/adventure route.
So, for those interested in Ubisoft's upcoming game, we've compiled everything we know about "Avatar: Frontier of Pandora," including release date, trailer, and gameplay.
As the trailer indicates, "Avatar: Frontier of Pandora" will be available on multiple next-generation platforms during 2022, including PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC, Google Stadia, and Amazon Luna.
Unfortunately, no further specifics are available at this time, but it is possible that Ubisoft will reveal more details in the coming months.
One thing to note, however, is that we already know that the sequel to the upcoming film Avatar is scheduled to appear around December 2022. Therefore, if the game developers have an agreement with the producers, we cannot rule out the possibility of a co-release during the holiday season of 2022. After all, the game was already delayed by the postponement of "Avatar 2," so one would assume that both releases would not be so far apart from each other.
The three-minute reveal trailer showed off many things, including stunning views of Pandora and a mysterious creature not spotted in James Cameron's 2009 film. Also featured was a battle between the native Nabis and the human-led Resource Development Authority, known as the RDA.
For those unfamiliar with the world of Avatar, the Na'vi are a race of tall extraterrestrial humanoids who inhabit the jungles of Pandora, and their peace is disturbed by the RDA, leading to the main conflict in the original film.
As in the film, the upcoming game also seems to feature other native creatures such as the dire horse, a horse-like creature used by the Na'vi as a steed for transportation and combat purposes.
A large dragon-like aerial creature called the Mountain Banshee has also been discovered and is often ridden by the Na'vi to travel long distances and hunt in the air.
All creatures used as mounts are bound to the Na'vi by a special indigenous bond called tsaheil. This gives the two pandor creatures the ability to form a "neural connection" by connecting their tail-like "queues."
However, as mentioned earlier, the game trailer also hints at the inclusion of new, previously unseen creature types that we can expect to be able to interact with throughout the game.
Not much is known about the gameplay itself, as the trailer did not include any ingame footage. However, it did give one or two hints of what gamers might expect.
The trailer opens with a first-person view of the jungle surroundings. After about 21 seconds, the trailer shifts perspective to one navigational character, who meets another blue humanoid.
This suggests that the game could see first-person action, which would be even more interesting if it could be played from both the Na'vi and RDA sides. Also, a lobby where users can customize their characters would certainly not be a bad idea.
Whether Avatar: Frontier of Pandora is an open-world adventure remains to be seen, despite the beautiful environments shown in the trailer. Ubisoft is no stranger to creating atmospheric games, having released major titles such as the "Far Cry" series and the "Assassin's Creed" series. Nevertheless, expectations are high for the upcoming "Avatar: Frontier of Pandora".
No one really wanted an Avatar game, especially since it has been many, many years since the movie was released. However, such a game is on the horizon.
And if "Avatar: Frontier of Pandora" can make the alien world feel alive and truly alien, it could be something special to explore. It would also look amazing. It will be some time before we see proper game footage, but "Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora" could be a game that is worth the tentative interest.
