Sonos earbuds may eventually appear, paired with the long-rumored Sonos headphones.
According to a USPTO patent application found by Zatz Not Funny, the design of the Sonos earphones features an unusual under-and-over charging case.
While the patent primarily covers wireless charging technology and not the earphones themselves as a product, some of the included illustrations show in considerable detail what the first Sonos wireless earphones could look like. In this example, the buds are wedge-shaped, almost like Star Wars Star Destroyers, and have a wide profile much like the Sony WF-1000XM3. [The Sony WF-1000XM4 wisely ditches this elongated shape for a more compact design. Also, the design of these Sonos earbuds has a lot of straight lines and does not appear to fit ergonomically in the ear.
However, the charging case is neat: one bud slots in at the top and the other at the bottom, which would make the case even smaller and more pocket-friendly than a case that holds two earphones side by side.
Also of interest is another drawing that seems to show the design of Sonos' over-the-ear headphones. And this drawing is less detailed than the leaked designs we have seen so far, and also seems to be included simply to show how the aforementioned wireless charging technology would apply to the larger headphone set.
As such, this is more likely a generic diagram than a new glimpse of actual Sonos headphones, but it does raise the interesting possibility of wireless charging support via a device that clamps onto one of the earcups.
Sonos headphone rumors died down when it was revealed that the company's next release would be the Sonos Roam speaker instead, but now both over-the-ear earphones and true wireless earbuds have been added to Sonos' hardware lineup both over-the-ear earbuds and true wireless earbuds, could be added to the Sonos hardware lineup.
