Harry Potter to air on HBO Max The rumored Harry Potter TV show has become a reality, in the form of an unscripted quiz show and retrospective special that will stream on HBO Max and air on Cartoon Network and TBS later this year.
Harry Potter is one of Warner Media's IP gems, but due to various contractual quirks, one must go to Peacock to see the Harry Potter films in order. Industry insiders have long predicted that Warner Media would bolster HBO Max with a Harry Potter spinoff, and fans have been hoping for a series set in that world, such as a prequel to The Marauders.
Instead, a quiz show was to be created. Cue the sad trombone.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," Warner will host a five-night Wizarding World event on HBO Max, Cartoon Network and TBS later this year.
The untitled quiz competition will feature Potterheads answering trivia questions and special guests. Casting is open at WizardingWorld.com.
"For fans who have always wanted to know what it's like to take the O.W.L. exam, this is as close as you can get!" said Warner Bros. executive Tom Chaim.
An online play-along component allows viewers at home to participate, and four one-hour quiz specials will be followed by a retrospective of the film.
This is definitely not the Harry Potter TV show Potterheads have been hoping to see; according to The Hollywood Reporter, "rough ideas are being considered" but "talks are still in the very early stages." Warner Bros. had previously denied that a Harry Potter series was in development.
So we can still hold out hope for a Marauders prequel, in which young James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew solemnly swear to their misdeeds. Until then, shed your Hogwarts robes, channel your inner Hermione Granger, and hone your trivia skills.
