Samsung may make products like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Watch 4 more durable by filing a trademark called "Pro-Shield."
The trademark, discovered by LetsGoDigital, was filed with the UK Intellectual Property Office and relates to smartphones, smartwatches, and their respective frames. In other words, Samsung may have plans to enhance both product lines.
What is interesting about this is that Samsung recently filed trademarks for what it calls "Armor Frames". These trademarks did not provide much in the way of details, but we can fill in some gaps with some empirical predictions.
Like Pro-Shield, this is designed for smartphones and smartphone frames. This suggests that it is a way to increase the strength of the phone's frame. How is still unclear.
The details of the ProShield trademark are similarly unclear. But we can speculate that Proshield is also a means of protecting smartwatches and smartphones from whatever dangers they might face in the world. Our guess? It has to do with display enhancement.
After all, Apple has already announced a "ceramic shield" display in the iPhone 12. It would be logical for Samsung to adopt the term "shield" for some kind of tempered display glass. The cell phone industry likes nothing better than to copy what everyone else is doing.
Proshield could also be related to phone and watch frames, given the classification of the trademark application. However, with Armor Frame also in the mix, it is unclear what Samsung is planning.
It seems a bit pointless to trademark two things that basically perform the same function. However, it would depend on the fine details of what protection the pro-shield and armor frame would provide.
We speculate that the ProShield could be applied to rumored upcoming foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Flip 3. Samsung has already made the Galaxy Z Fold 2 stronger than its predecessor, but it is possible that the foldable phone's display could be further enhanced for longer-term durability.
After all, protection is protection, and smartphones and smartwatches are notoriously fragile. Smartphones and smartwatches are fragile. Especially since smartphones and smartwatches are left outside for extended periods of time.
We will just have to wait and see what Samsung brings to the table when they announce the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Flip 3, and Galaxy Watch 4.
