Amazon today (April 27) announced its next-generation Fire HD 10 tablet. Instead, there are three different models, starting at $149 and going up to $199.
Here's everything you need to know about the Amazon Fire HD 10, Fire HD 10 Plus, and Fire HD 10 Kids Edition.
The all-new Fire HD 10 is the successor to the current Amazon Fire HD 10, which is listed on our Best Tablets page even though it launched in 2019.
The new model starts at the same price - $149.99 - and is available for pre-order starting today; the Fire HD 10 will ship on May 26. It comes in 32GB or 64GB of storage and comes in black, denim, lavender, and olive.
The Amazon Fire HD 10 has a 1080p 10.1-inch display that is 10% brighter than the current model, a 2MP front-facing camera, a 2GHz octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM, and Dolby Atmos audio. The bezels are thinner than the previous model, but still quite large compared to the iPad Pro. the Fire HD 10 promises up to 12 hours of battery life, which is one hour less than what the current model recorded in our battery tests.
The Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus starts at $179 ($30 more than the base model) but has 4GB of RAM, a soft-touch finish, and Qi wireless charging. It also transforms into a smart display when paired with the Anker Made for Amazon wireless charging dock.
The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition is targeted at children ages 3-7 and is priced at $199. It comes with a child-proof case and is available in three colors: sky blue, aquamarine, and lavender. The kickstand on the back of the case can be used as a handle. In addition, Amazon Kids+ is free for one year (starting at $2.99/month for Prime members) and comes with a two-year warranty.
The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition differs from the Amazon Fire Kids Pro, which was also just announced.
Amazon is offering a Productivity Bundle with either the Fire HD 10 or Fire HD 10 Plus to promote the tablet more as a work device. The bundle starts at $219.99 and includes a detachable Bluetooth keyboard case plus a one-year subscription to Microsoft 365 ($69.99 per year thereafter).
We consider the previous Fire HD 10 to be the best tablet Amazon has made, not to mention one of the best Android tablets, even if Google apps are not available. (We have no reason to believe this will change with the new model.)
It will also be interesting to see how the Plus version of the Fire HD 10 performs in real-world tests. The biggest addition at this point is the Plus' wireless charging, which could make the Fire HD 10 Plus a great smart display for those who don't want to buy the Amazon Echo Show as well.
All Fire HD 10 models are available for pre-order today and will begin shipping on May 26.
