The iPad Pro 2021 has so much to offer, but there is bad news for those planning to upgrade from the previous 12.9-inch model to the new version with Apple's powerful M1 chip and mini LED display.

The $350 Magic Keyboard accessory that was compatible with the 12.9-inch 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro models does not appear to fit the new 2021 model, despite the screen size not changing between generations.

The change was first revealed by French site iGeneration, which revealed that putting the new iPad Pro in the old Magic Keyboard case simply would not close properly. The problem is that once closed, the Magic Keyboard clamps the tablet quite tightly," the translated version of the site explains. Apple has left not a millimeter of flexibility because this accessory must hold the iPad in place."

Apple's typical design trajectory is to get thinner and lighter with each generation, but this year's 12.9-inch iPad Pro goes against that trend by being 0.5 mm thicker than its predecessor.

The reason is believed to be the introduction of mini LED screen technology, which is a significant upgrade from the previous generation and provides owners with much better image quality. that the 11-inch model did not receive that particular upgrade and maintains the same dimensions as the previous version. Given that, it would seem likely that it is the culprit. It is also compatible with the previous 11-inch version of the Magic Keyboard.

This is a bit of a kicker for buyers of the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, who will have to consider an additional $349 on top of the new model's $1,099 minimum price. Of course, this price is limited to 128GB of storage; if you want 2TB and 5G connectivity, the price can go as high as $2,399.

This optional 5G is one of the new features that will debut on the 2021 iPad Pro. In addition to this and the Mini LED display, the new iPad Pro models will introduce a TrueDepth sensor in the front-facing camera, improved FaceTime calling, and Thunderbolt support.

It also features Apple's excellent M1 chip, which debuted in last year's MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini. This chip improves the CPU performance of the A12Z Bionic in the previous generation iPad Pro by 50% and also leaps graphics performance by 40%.

To be sure, few users are likely to upgrade from last year's iPad Pro 12.9-inch to this year's model. But early adopters and power users who need the latest and greatest are bound to be disappointed.
