A new Siri remote control was unveiled at Apple's Spring Loaded Event along with the new Apple TV 4K. This new remote has a fresh new design, but actually removes some gaming features.
The accelerometer and gyroscope features that were present in previous Siri remotes have been removed from this 2021 refresh. This means that the remote will not work with some games available on Apple TV.
Of course, Apple's tvOS currently supports Xbox and PlayStation controllers, so this may be an attempt to entice those who like to play games on Apple TV to get those game pads instead.
The first generation Siri remote also works with the new Apple TV. So if you already have an Apple TV and enjoy gaming, we recommend holding off on upgrading; Apple no longer sells the old version of the remote, so if you want the accelerometer and gyroscope features, get them now before they become hard to find.
This is not the only technology the new Siri remotes lose. The new remotes will not have the U1 chip and will not support Apple's "Find My app" series. So you should be careful not to lose your new remote control. You might want to stick an AirTag on it just in case.
Softening the blow somewhat is that the new Siri remote looks quite impressive from a design standpoint. Instead of the traditional remote's trackpad, it now has a click pad, as well as a power and mute button. [Apple has wasted no time in introducing this second-generation remote control to the living room. The remote is also backward compatible, so it can be used with previous Apple TVs without having to upgrade to the new Apple TV 4K.
Apple's latest showcase wasn't just focused on Apple TV and TV-related accessories; the lid was finally lifted on the iPad Pro 2021 and the new iMac 2021 (both with M1 chips).
