Disney and Sony deal will solve the problem of Disney Plus Spider-Man

One of the most troubling gaps in Disney Plus is Sony Pictures' Spider-Man film; the Tom Holland film, set in the MCU, is not available on Disney Plus. However, Spider-Man may soon be available for viewing in a hurry.

Disney and Sony Pictures just announced a huge licensing deal that will make Sony films available on Disney Plus from 2022 to 2026 (not including December's Spider-Man: No Way Home). The deal also fills the aforementioned void in the MCU library on Disney Plus. Many of Sony's films will appear on a wide range of Walt Disney Corp. owned distribution platforms, including ABC, Disney Channels, Freeform, FX, and Hulu.

The deal is not just for upcoming Spider-Man films, such as "Morbius," starring Jared Leto. According to the press release,

"The deal also includes rights to a significant number of SPE's iconic library titles, from the "Jumanji" and "Hotel Transylvania" franchises to Sony Pictures' Marvel Character's Universe films including "Spider-Man grant."

It is unclear where the Spider-Man films, including the Venom sequel, scheduled to debut in 2021, will land.

Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland's Spider-Man films will all be released on Disney Plus through at least 2026. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse disappeared from Netflix late last year, and I would like to see it as part of that package.

When will these films appear on Disney Plus? The press release does not specify. However, it does state that "With this agreement, Hulu will have access to a significant number of library titles as early as June of this year."

What does the Sony-Netflix deal mean? The process goes like this: Netflix acquires Sony Pictures after it appears on its pay-per-view video-on-demand service (usually after theatrical release). Then, after a certain amount of time, these films migrate to Disney Plus; Netflix owns what is called the "Pay 1 window" of Sony Pictures, and Disney acquires the "Pay 2 window."

The deal is for the U.S. market only; Variety reports that Sony can expect around $3 billion from the combined Netflix and Disney deal.
