Update: A purportedly leaked promotional image of the Google Pixel Watch shows a sleek smartwatch.
The latest Google Pixel Watch leak is one of the most significant we've seen so far regarding this long-rumored smartwatch. Technology insider Jon Prosser has released a series of renderings showing the purported Pixel Watch design from all angles.
In addition to a thorough (albeit unofficial) look at the Google Pixel Watch, codenamed "Rohan," Prosser offered a possible release date. If the leaker's information is accurate, we could see this smartwatch "sometime in October."
Not only that, but now there are new reports suggesting that Google is actively developing a smartwatch.
As Prosser has done with Apple leaks in the past, he had the Google Pixel Watch rendered by artist @rendersbyian after seeing real images of the smartwatch, or so he claims.
We had long expected a rounded shape, given that concept designs created based on leaked information had many rounded watch dials. However, these new renderings show a completely bezel-less design that looks better than we had imagined.
The smartwatch casing appears to be available in several different finishes. Google will reportedly also offer at least 20 different bands for the Pixel Watch.
Google-designed smartwatches have been talked about for years, but have been slow to materialize. Sure, Fossil and others have produced solid smartwatches like the Gen 5 with Wear OS, but it is definitely different from a smartwatch designed by Google from the ground up. just as the Google Pixel 5 is different from the Samsung Galaxy S21, the Pixel Watch will do things its own way.
Based on the features of Wear OS, we can expect a set of fitness tracking features and smart handling of notifications, navigation from Google Maps, etc. Google has made the Pixel Watch very Google Assistant-centric, and the Pixel Watch will be a smartwatch that will be able to handle the same kind of features that the Pixel 5 does, likely to add Pixel-grade customization as well as better integration with other Google products and services.
Our best smartwatch list will show that there is no shortage of Wear OS devices. But arguably no smartwatch has seriously challenged the Apple Watch, which is why there is so much excitement around the Google Pixel Watch.
An all-Google smartwatch could offer the best rendering of the Wear OS from the developer, thus allowing for better synergy between the operating system features and the watch hardware. Again, we have witnessed this with the Pixel phone.
And since there is no way to prove that whatever Prosser leaked is legitimate, it is worth alerting people to this with the usual pinch of skeptical salt. Still, the Google Pixel Watch is worth a little anticipation.
