Sony has announced the free games offered to PlayStation Plus subscribers on PS5 and PS4 in April. Fewer than last month, but at least one big game.
Starting April 6, PS5 users will get the new "Oddworld: Soul Storm," while PS4 and PS5 gamers will also have access to "Days Gone" and "Zombie Army 4: Dead War." Note that "Days Gone" is already playable through the PlayStation Plus collection for PlayStation Plus subscribers with a PS5.
Oddworld: Soulstorm, like previous entries in the franchise, puts players in the role of Abe, a 2.5D side-scrolling platformer in which Abe must free his race from the bondage of slave labor. oddworld games have been around since the original PlayStation era; 2014's Oddworld Abe's Oddysee New 'n Tasty currently has a score of 84 on Metacritic.
Days Gone was Bend Studio's first major PS4 game, released in 2019. It was often compared to The Last of Us due to its gritty world and hordes of zombies. The plot centers on Deacon St. John, a bounty hunter who rides a motorcycle in Oregon and fights off "freakers."
The last game included in April was Zombie Army 4: Dead War. It is from Rebellion Developments, makers of Sniper Elite 4. In this game, you must take on Hitler's hordes in 1940s Europe and defeat his undead army. The game can be played solo or with up to three other players.
April offers only three games instead of the usual four, which is fewer than in past months, which makes sense given that PlayStation Plus has not included PS3 or PS Vita games since February 2019.
In fact, Sony completely shut down the PS3, PS Vita, and PSP storefronts later this year, much to the chagrin of avid PlayStation fans and some developers. However, with the growing competition from Xbox Game Pass, Sony will need to continue to add more value to satisfy PlayStation users.
