The first episode of "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" featured the "new Captain America." (Because Captain America himself bequeathed his shield and name to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), who deserved the position.
However, according to potential spoilers for "Falcon and the Winter Soldier," this new Captain America may not have the shield for very long. WARNING: SPOILERS AVAILABLE
Chinese retailer TMall's Disney Store leaked images of "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" merchandise, and one toy in particular caught Reddit's attention. The packaging depicts Sam and Falcon's wings, but his costume is all red, white, and blue. The toy also comes with a Captain America shield.
Don't think this only has to do with Sam actually using the shield, as seen in the trailer. The new armor gives a little more weight to this. While it is possible that this merchandise is a fake, the image does resemble another toy that was leaked in January.
If this toy is real, it would confirm that Sam will be the next true Captain America, as fans had hoped. However, it will not be an easy journey for Falcon.
Perhaps Falcon and the Winter Soldier will follow the comic book storyline of John Walker being named the new Captain America, losing his title and becoming a U.S. Agent.
In the show, Walker would serve as a contrast to Sam. As showrunner Malcolm Spellman told USA Today, "Walker speaks to the idea of American exceptionalism and the need to question it."
Sam, on the other hand, questions whether he is qualified to carry Steve Rogers' shield. He says, "The conflict I most wanted to explore was whether or not a black man could or could not be Captain America. What does it mean if we succeed? What would it mean if we failed?
As Sam said to Steve when he got the shield, "I'll do my best." And as Steve replied, "So it's yours."
