Apple has reportedly scrapped plans to add a feature similar to Samsung's PowerShare to the iPhone 13. The feature would have allowed users to wirelessly charge devices like AirPods from the phone's internal battery.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple "had discussed internally the goal of having many mobile devices like the Apple Watch, AirPods, and iPhone charge each other, but that feature is unlikely to happen in the near future." For the 2019 iPhone, Apple had planned a feature that would allow users to charge their AirPods on the back of the phone, but canceled it."
That's not to say Apple isn't trying to find a solution to wireless charging on the go. Garman has heard that Apple is working on a magnetically attached battery pack that snaps on to the iPhone 12 using MagSafe.
Unlike previous iPhone battery extenders, this is not a case. It is a battery covered by a white rubber exterior that allows the iPhone and other accessories to continue charging wirelessly.
According to internal tests, the battery pack could be secured in place. However, development has stalled due to an error indicating that the pack is overheating, even though it is not actually overheating.
Of course, just because a product is reportedly in development at Apple does not necessarily mean it will actually be released; in 2017, Apple introduced the AirPower mat, which can charge multiple devices simultaneously. This mat was ultimately cancelled due to overheating issues.
As for wireless charging and MagSafe, it seems to be the future Apple has in mind. Rumors have already started to circulate that the 2021 MacBook will include MagSafe. And if, as rumored, the portless iPhone 13 comes to fruition, MagSafe will be the only way to keep that iPhone charged.
