Update: PS5 is best for Elden Ring.
The entire gaming industry seems to be obsessed with The Elden Ring at the moment. Developer From Software's latest tough action-RPG is not only challenging, but fascinating. But if you haven't played it yet, you might want to consider playing it on the PS5. Sony's flagship console has a significant advantage over the Xbox Series X.
As highlighted in IGN's performance review video, PS5 players spend less time looking at loading screen hints than Xbox Series X players significantly reduced
If you are playing on a PC, please see the Elden Ring PC Issues Guide and how to address the issue.
IGN's testing found that the average loading time on the PS5 was about 7 seconds, while on the Xbox Series X it took as long as 20 seconds to get players back into the action.
I played "The Elden Ring" on the Xbox Series X over the weekend and experienced a loading time of about 19 seconds before starting the game from the main menu and an average loading speed of 12 seconds before returning to the fight after a death.
A loading time of roughly 20 seconds may not seem like a big deal, especially when some of the larger open-world games on PS4 and Xbox One have loading times of over a minute. One could conceivably play for a long time without ever seeing a loading screen, as in Dying Light 2: Stay Human, for example, but in Elden Rings you will die frequently, and each time you die there is another loading.
The 20 second loading each time you die seems like an unnecessary punishment on the Xbox Series X. This loading discrepancy can be a real pain if you are regularly dying while trying to beat a difficult boss. It's also something to do regularly with the Elden Ring when fast-traveling around the map.
This difference in load speeds really shows the power of the PS5's custom SSD: while the PS5 has less native storage capacity than the Xbox Series X (825GB vs. 1TB), the drives in Sony's console are capable of 5.5GB per second, which is twice as fast as Microsoft's flagship Xbox (about 2.4GB per second).
If only Xbox consoles are available, this issue is not a deal-breaker. As mentioned, I have personally explored "Lands Between" on the Xbox Series X and have enjoyed it regardless. However, if you have the option to play it on PS5, you absolutely should. Right now, the PS5 is arguably the better platform for the console.
