Surprise! This iPhone14Pro design can replace the notch

We may now have confirmation that the iPhone 14 Pro lineup will feature Apple's iconic notch.

Prominent Apple leaker and Twitter user ShrimpApplePro recently tweeted (open in new tab) photos of potential iPhone 14 Pro display designs. These photos show that the iconic Apple notch that has graced recent iPhones has been abandoned in favor of a pill-shaped camera cutout.

The regular iPhone 14 and new iPhone 14 Max are still expected to feature the notch.

This is a bit surprising given that a single notch was used instead of the rumored punch hole or pill design. Previous rumors had suggested that Apple would do away with the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max and adopt a separate pill-shaped notch for the punch-out selfie camera and Face ID. Nevertheless, this leak seems to confirm that the notch will be eliminated on the Pro models.

Along with the photos, ShrimpApplePro also suggests that the entire iPhone 14 lineup will have 6GB of RAM.

It would not be a huge surprise if this turns out to be true. Previous iPhone 14 rumors have also suggested that the iPhone 14 lineup will have 6GB of RAM, but with an important caveat. Leaked information suggests that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will use LPDDR4X RAM, while the Pro model will upgrade to the faster LPDDR5 memory type.

Aside from abandoning the mini for the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max/Plus, not many upgrades are expected for the base iPhone models; one thing that might be seen is an upgrade in refresh rate, with the base One thing we might see is an upgrade in refresh rate, raising the base iPhone from a 60Hz refresh rate to 90Hz - at least on the Max/Plus models. However, this rumor has only been leaked once, so it may not come to fruition.

At the very least, the Pro and Pro Max should receive some kind of upgrade. The already high 120Hz refresh rate will not be changed, but the new Pro and Pro Max models are said to be always-on display. This feature, which appears to be confirmed by code in the iOS 16 beta, will allow users to view "weather, calendar, stock prices, activity, and other data" on the lock screen.

Finally, as noted above, the Pro and Pro Max models are expected to eliminate the iPhone notch and add one or two notches. Again, previous rumors have suggested that Apple will use two notches: a punched-out selfie camera and a separate pill-shaped notch for Face ID. However, according to this latest rumor, it appears that the notches will simply be one large, pill-shaped notch. In any case, the notch should only be available on the lower-priced iPhone 14s.

This latest rumor almost confirms that the iPhone 14 will have 6GB of RAM across the four expected models. At this time, the Pro and Pro Max are expected to have upgraded LPDDR5 RAM, which is faster than the LPDDR4 RAM expected to be found in the base and Max/Plus models of the iPhone 14.

The iPhone 14 is expected to be announced at the Apple Event on September 7. Apple has not officially confirmed which devices will appear at the event, but it is widely believed that the iPhone 14 lineup will be announced along with the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Series 8 Pro. It is also likely that the Apple Watch SE 2 and Apple AirPods Pro 2 will appear at the event along with the latest iPhones.
