Rumors of a foldable iPad have just been shot down for launch in 2024

The first foldable iPad will not appear in 2024, claims Bloomberg reporter and Apple leaker Mark Gurman (opens in new tab) . That contradicts an earlier report (citing Ming-Chi Kuo (open in new tab)) that said 2024 would indeed be the year Apple introduces a foldable tablet.

Garman says we will still see some upgrades, like an OLED display on the iPad Pro, and "spec upgrades" (probably a new chipset and little else) to the base iPad 10.9-inch and iPad mini. However, he has not heard anything about a foldable iPad, and he does not mention the carbon fiber kickstand that the foldable will apparently use.

Both Garman and Kuo have proven reliable in the past in predicting Apple's next move. We don't know what to make of the clash, and we don't know which is right (or at least more right) about the iPad news. For the time being, in the absence of other sources, we can only wait to see if either side retracts or changes its claims in the future.

Foldable devices are generally not mainstream, and foldable phones are the closest thing we have to a true competitor to existing non-foldable devices: rare examples like the Thinkpad X1 Fold, or work-in-progress like Samsung's rumored foldable Galaxy Tab. Allegations aside, we have yet to see many folding tablets.

The best iPads already have no trouble dominating the tablet space overall, so in a way it would be surprising to see Apple rush to innovate when there is no pressing need. However, we have heard stories before of a folding iPad before a folding iPhone or flexible full-screen MacBook.

For the time being, we'll keep our foldable iPad rumor roundup up to date, so whenever there are further leaks or rumors, there's everything you need to know.
