New Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Photo sample reveals a very powerful camera

Make no mistake. When the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra launches next week, it could very well take the #1 spot for best camera phone. And the latest leaked photo samples show amazing promise.

Indeed, with its rumored 200MP main camera sensor and improved low-light performance, the Galaxy S23 Ultra could beat the likes of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Google Pixel 7 Pro.

The latest round of photos comes from prolific Twitter leaker Edwards Urbina (opens in new tab), who allegedly got his hands on the Galaxy S23 Ultra before the Samsung Unpacked event on February 1. We already saw some early S23 Ultra photo samples from Urbina earlier this week, but now he's back for more.

These photos, taken with the main camera's 50MP camera setting, show that RAW mode brings out more detail in the image, especially in the foreground. Leaves and trees that would otherwise be hidden in shadow in normal mode are captured more clearly.

Also notice that the RAW mode adds depth to the clouds. Photos taken in RAW mode are also more evenly exposed.

Next are photos of the monkeys taken at 10x zoom and 30x zoom; at 30x zoom, the image is a bit hazy, but you can still see fine details. Note the hairs on the monkey's arms and the veins in the leaves. This is an impressive photo. Also, keep in mind that the maximum digital zoom on the iPhone 14 Pro Max is 15x.

We actually did a zoom showdown between the S22 Ultra, Pixel 7 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, and Samsung came out on top. Assuming the photo processing is even better this time around, the S23 Ultra will extend its lead even further.

Not that the S22 Ultra was inferior in the night mode department, but these two photos show that Samsung's improved night mode photography can at least be on par with the Pixel 7 Pro.

The photo on the left has less ambient light, but the S23 Ultra does a good job of showing the bricks, the flag on the left, and the car in the background. The motorcycle in the foreground is a bit lost, but still visible.

The image on the right is much brighter, and the S23 Ultra does a good job of showing the wires crossing the poles. The cafe sign is clearly legible and the chipped paint on the yellow building is visible.

The more leaks that come out showing the performance of the Galaxy S23 Ultra's camera, the more excited I get about its potential; 200MP sounds impressive, but I'm more interested in the actual image quality. And at least based on the few samples we've seen so far, Samsung seems determined to no longer be in the same league as camera phones like Apple and Google.
