Last night's PlayStation showcase wasn't just about game trailers. Sony also announced several hardware announcements, including the Project Q, a handheld device that streams content from the PS5 console. But that's not all, Sony also announced PlayStation-branded wireless earbuds that will be available later this year.
Sony already produces some of the best wireless earbuds, some of the best headphones, and one of the best PS5 headsets in the form of the Pulse 3D wireless headset. Needless to say, the idea that Sony is now producing wireless earbuds with PS5 styling and branding is pretty exciting.
Sony didn't say much about the earbuds other than the fact that they offer "next-generation audio immersion" for both PS5 and PC gaming. This suggests that, like the Pulse 3D headset, these earbuds will also offer 3D sound.
Sony also revealed that the earbuds will feature a new wireless technology that will provide lossless audio with low latency. They will also support Bluetooth, allowing simultaneous connection to smartphones.
But why not use earphones like Sony's WF-1000XM4? the PS5 does not support Bluetooth audio, and native wireless audio support is limited to certain headsets. In other words, it is not possible to connect Bluetooth-only earphones without connecting some sort of adapter to the console.
Therefore, these earphones are naturally designed specifically for the PS5, but can be connected to other products as well. Also, the PS5-inspired design is quite stylish. It could also be added to the PSVR 2 to eliminate the wires from the built-in earphones.
We'll have to wait a bit more patiently for more details to be released, but needless to say, we're looking forward to seeing what these earphones are capable of. We can only hope that Sony will find the good sense to release them in black as well.
