Framework Laptop 16 is the modular gaming laptop we've all been waiting for. At Frameworks' "Next Level" event presented at this year's Game Developers Conference (GDC), the company claimed that this modular laptop could "provide the Holy Grail for gamers."
The Framework Laptop 16 is currently available for pre-order starting at $1,399 and is expected to arrive in late 2023, and Frameworks plans to open source the documentation for the expansion bays, keyboard, and expansion card system on GitHub. This means that people can start thinking about how to customize the Laptop 16.
Now that pre-orders are open, let's take a look at all the things you can upgrade with the Framework Laptop 16.
Framework Laptop 16 is powered by an AMD Radeon RX 7700S graphics module with 8GB of GDDR6. However, if needed, this GPU can be replaced and another GPU can be used via the laptop's expansion bay shell.
The company states that this "allows you to use the impressive integrated graphics capabilities of the Ryzen 7040 series."
Framework appears to be in partnership with AMD, but since it is a modular system, Nvidia GPUs should also be able to connect.Framework Laptop 16 has two DDR5 SO-DIMM sockets and M.2 2280 and M.2 2230 NVMe sockets; both DIY and pre-built models can be upgraded with up to 64GB of RAM and 10TB of storage . the DIY version allows you to bring your own. If needed, you can further expand with dual M.2 storage expansion bay cards or 1TB expansion cards.
A fully customizable keyboard is one of the main selling points of the Framework Laptop 16. It is possible to connect a numeric keypad, change input modules, install a center or offset keyboard, RGB macro pad, LED modules, etc.
According to Framework, the company has opened up its input module system to developers, allowing for custom input options beyond what the company has created.
Framework's expansion card system allows you to choose exactly the ports you want and put them where you want them; the Laptop 16 has six expansion slots instead of four like the previous Framework Laptop 13, so you have more More choices.
"You can add everything you need: USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, MicroSD, Ethernet, audio, storage, and more.
Replacing the Laptop 16's graphics card and memory is all well and good, but what if you want another bezel? Thanks to the magnetically attached bezel, you can change to any number of the available bezels the company offers. According to the company, there are a variety of colors to choose from.
We're big fans of Framework laptops, so it's great to finally get a gaming-focused Framework Laptop 16. Personally, I'm looking forward to going hands-on with this laptop to see if its customization makes it one of the best gaming laptops out there.
The Framework Laptop 16 will be available later this year for $1,399 for the DIY model and $1,699 for the pre-assembled version. We will update you with more information as it becomes available in the months leading up to the launch of this laptop.
