The iPhone 15 lineup, especially the iPhone 15 Pro, could become more affordable thanks to Apple ordering more displays to meet demand, according to a new report from David Naranjo of DSCC (via 9to5Mac).

According to Naranjo's report, "From June to July, iPhone 15 panel shipments are expected to exceed the iPhone 14 series by 100% over the same period in 2022." This is consistent with DSSC's Ross Young's earlier claim that Apple has iPhone 15 screens in stock, but he did not publicly state that display orders would increase so significantly.

A higher percentage of displays are also being made for the Pro model, Naranjo said. He writes, "The current shipment mix of panels for the iPhone 15 series shows a 58% share for the Pro model compared to a 43% share for the iPhone 14 Pro model in the June-July quarter," suggesting that Apple has learned from last year.

Last year was a time when the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max were clearly the models that early adopters wanted to buy, yet Apple overestimated iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus sales in the early stages, resulting in a shortage of product. This was the case. The wait for users who had not pre-ordered extended for weeks or months until after the holiday season that year, and undoubtedly cost Apple otherwise guaranteed sales.

We have heard rumors that the number of users upgrading their iPhones to the iPhone 15 model this year may be above average. Part of this is likely to be fueled by users seduced by rumored new features such as USB-C charging, Dynamic Island cutouts, a 48MP main camera common to all models, plus a new chip for the Pro model and a periscope telephoto camera for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

New hardware aside, the upgrade "super-cycle" could also be attributed to older iPhone users holding off on upgrading longer than expected. Given Apple's generous iOS update schedule and the relatively slow rate of upgrades between generations, it makes sense to hold onto an iPhone as long as possible. However, with models like the iPhone X confirmed not to receive a major iOS 17 update this year, it could be an upgrade-o-clock for a larger than average segment of iPhone users.

This report that Apple is preparing for higher than usual demand at launch is therefore very reassuring. So are recent claims that Apple has ordered additional inventory of other iPhone 15 components and has requested special assistance in assembling the device.

Normally, for iPhone 15 rumors, we have to wait until the supposed Apple event in September until we can confirm whether or not they are true. In this case, however, there will be no way to know if Apple has iPhone 15 models in stock until the phones are on sale and we see how easy or difficult they are to order.
