Disney to Release $1,500 Blu-ray Box - This is a terrible deal!

Disney has announced a new Blu-ray box set that costs more than one of the best OLED TVs and a top-of-the-line player combined. Even Disney enthusiasts will need to think seriously before investing their money in this massive movie collection.

On November 14, for $1,500 (yes, $1,500!) ), the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection is a box set of 100 Disney films on Blu-ray disc, starting with 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and ending with Pixar's "Elemental," which opened in theaters in June, It will be released Wednesday (September 13) on Disney Plus.

The box set is packed with dozens and dozens of popular animated features from Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, and the Disneytoon Studios, which closed in 2018, and shows how many beloved House of Mouse has released over the past 85 years It underscores how many masterpieces it has released.

The full list of films included in the Disney Legacy Film Collection can be seen below (courtesy of The Wrap):

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

2. Pinocchio (1940)

3. Fantasia ( (1940)

4. "Dumbo" (1941)

5. "Bambi" (1942)

The set comes in a custom-made decorative box and is divided into three volumes. Each volume includes the original poster design and can be developed as a storybook. This expensive package also includes a digital copy of all 100 films, a certificate of authenticity, a lithograph of the upcoming Disney film "Wishes," and a collectible set of crystal Mickey Mouse ears. These extras are sure to delight Disney collectors.

There is no denying that Disney has put a lot of thought into the design of the box set, and the selection of the 100 films is well reviewed--although the omission of "The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride" is unbearably unfair--but the box set is seriously overpriced, it is hard to deny.

I went through a period of Blu-ray hoarding, and even though my collecting days are (mostly) past, I still cherish my "Alien Anthology" and "Batman: The Animated Series Complete" box sets. So I definitely recognize the value of a well put together Blu-ray set. Furthermore, while I acknowledge that a collection of classic Disney films in an increasingly niche physical media format will carry a hefty price tag, the math on this film just doesn't add up for me.

The Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection costs $1500 and contains 100 films. At $15 per disc, it is within the normal retail price range for Blu-ray (roughly $15-$30). For a set of this size, one would expect the cost per disc to be $10 at most. In fact, most people would be much better off choosing a few dozen of their favorites from the 100 films included in this set and purchasing each one individually. That way, they would save a considerable amount of money and would not be saddled with discs of movies they are not particularly interested in.

Of course, the extras included in this set are definitely worth it. And when it comes to presentation, Disney has done a tremendous job of making this box set look like a premium product. But unless you're an avid Disney collector, it's hard to sell this 100-film Blu-ray collection at this price. And that's before considering that you can pay $1,500 for more than a decade's worth of Disney Plus, with nearly all of these films available for streaming right now.
