Dune Part 2 is officially out. The release date for the film has been moving like a sandworm through the dunes of Arrakis, but things seem to be pretty much set. That means there are only a few months left to wait for the long-awaited sequel to "Dune" in 2021.

The desire to produce "Dune" has been around for some time: the desire for a part two has been around for some time. At a screening of "Dune" attended by Tom's Guide staff, Villeneuve revealed his intention not only to make a second "Dune" film, but also to follow up "Dune: Part Two" with an adaptation of "Dune Messiah". Villeneuve revealed that he intends to make a film of Dune Messiah following Dune: Part Two.

But for now, let's focus on "Dun": "Dun: Part Two," the next installment in this so-called trilogy. Here is everything you need to know about the next "Dun" movie, including release date, cast, trailer, and more.

The release date for "Dune: Part Two" has moved several times for various reasons. However, Dune: Warner Bros. and Legendary moved it up two weeks from March 15, resulting in a March 1, 2024 release date for Dune: Part Two.

This date is still subject to change, but at this point it appears that the beach is set in stone rather than moved. Not the other way around, especially since other films are likely to make way for a sequel to "Dune."

So far, Warner Bros. Discovery has released three official trailers for "Dune": part two, the first of which was released in May 2023 and begins with an innocent conversation about swimming between Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya). But then things quickly turn into a story of threats to the empire and revenge. It is clear that swimming will have to wait until the Halconen family and the empire are defeated and the Freemen and the Atreides reclaim Arrakis.

The biggest development in this first trailer, however, is the appearance of Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, daughter of Emperor Padishah, ruler of the known universe in the "Dune" series. Other new faces appear, led by Faid-Rota Harkonnen (Austin Butler), but it is clear that Irulan will play a major role in what is to come.

The second trailer begins the process of developing "Dune" from a simple struggle for revenge and freedom to something with much greater consequences. It highlights the reappearance of Baron Halconen (Stellan Skarsgård) and the conflict between the Halconen and Atreides families. Also making his first appearance is Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken), who hopes to wipe out the threat of the Pole and the Atreides family.

Finally, a spectacular new third trailer was released on December 12, 2023. This trailer focuses on the far-reaching implications of this universal conflict and, just as importantly, Paul's growing power.

While most of the trailer is a rerun of what we have already seen, there are some notable moments. The emperor now refers to Paul as a prophet, a role that seems to have been assigned to him even before Paul was born. It is clear that the emperor does not take the ongoing conflict in Arrakis lightly, as he has Fayed-Lota Harkonnen, played by Austin Baltar, personally deal with Paul. We also learn more about Butler's Feyd-Lauta and get a hint of the role of the Bene Gesserit cult in the ongoing conflict.

Many familiar faces return in "Dune Part 2," from Chalamet's Paul Atreides to Zendaya's Chani, but there will also be a new cast as new characters involved in the conflict in Arrakis are introduced. Here's who you can expect to see in Dune:

Not only is it far past, but the "long live the fighter" theme seems to remain a key theme for the next chapter in Villeneuve's "Dune" film franchise.

If you are planning to watch "Dune: Part 2," you must have seen "Dune: Part 1. Despite being titled "Dune" for marketing reasons, the first film is definitely the first part of the story and is titled "Part 1" on the screen. [If you haven't seen the 2021 film yet, stop what you're doing and go see it. But if you have seen it, here's a quick recap of what happened.

In the first "Dune" film, we meet the Atreides family, led by the Duke of Leto (Oscar Isaac). The Duke has a son, Paul (Chalamet), whom Leto had with Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), a concubine of Benet Jeserit. Because of his parentage, Paul himself is trained not only in the art of war and leadership, but also in the mystical ways of the Bene Gesserit Order. However, he has not yet mastered its teachings.

But when the emperor of the known universe orders the Dukes of Leto and the Atreides to take command of the planet Arrakis from the Halkonen family, things start to move. This is because Arrakis has the "spice" that allows interstellar navigation for the navigators of the Spacing Guild. Without it, the empire will collapse.

Unfortunately for the Atreides, this all seems to be a plan to wipe out the rising Atreides family. Before Leto and his house can gain a foothold on the desert planet, the Harkonnen family and the emperor's Sardaukar army (disguised as the Harkonnen army) invade to reclaim the planet and destroy the Atreides family.

The plan was largely successful, but there were two problems. First, in a last desperate act, Leto bites a poison gas capsule, killing himself and Baron Halconen's mentat Piter de Fries (David Dastmalchian) and seriously wounding the Baron (Stellan Skarsgård), who ultimately survives.

The biggest mistake, however, is that Paul and his wife Jessica survive. Thanks to her Bene Gesellit technique and survival equipment, they trek through the desert, including Stilgar (Javier Bardem), the leader of the Freemen with whom Leto had diplomatic relations before the Harkonnen invasion, and Chani (Zendaya), the girl Paul had a vision of in the spice The Freemen could be found.

However, Paul and Jessica's arrival was not welcomed by all the freemen, and eventually one of them challenged Paul to a ritual duel. Paul wins the duel and asks (against Jessica's wishes) to join the Freemen. This brings peace between the Atreides and the native Fremen, but now the battle with the Harkonen begins.

Of course, one could explain the entire plot of "Dune": one could explain the entire plot of "Dune: Part 2" here. After all, this is an adaptation of a very popular book. But I won't. If you want to know what happens first, you can always read "Dune.

However, this is still a film adaptation, which means that the film could make different choices than Frank Herbert did when he wrote the book. And two possible choices seem worth highlighting here.

First, while "Dune" may have been a bit slow at times, we can expect action in "Dune: Part 2": in an interview with Total Film magazine (ht GamesRadar), director Denis Villeneuve said, "The second film is ...... It will be more of an action film than the first part. It is more muscular. Plus, the action will look visually beautiful because the whole film was shot with IMAX cameras.

Next, Villeneuve may focus more on the "Bene Gesserit" than expected (h/t ScreenRant). My version of "Dune" is that it was the Bene Gesserit that really fascinated me about the book. They are the puppet masters of the universe. So I expect this mystical order to have a big impact on how the film unfolds.

Director Denis Villeneuve has stated publicly that he would love to do a third "Dune" film, saying in an interview with Empire, "If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be my dream. " According to Villeneuve, this third film is an adaptation of Hébert's Dune Messiah, but the tone may be slightly different from the original. In any case, it will not portray Paul as a classic hero figure, and it will be the last Dune film directed by Villeneuve. In Villeneuve's words, "Then the book becomes more . . becomes more esoteric."

The screenplay for this adaptation may already be nearly finished; in a December 2023 interview with Korean media (h/t Variety), Villeneuve said of the script for "Dune 3" that it is "almost finished, but not quite." Villeneuve said that he may have to take a pan "for my (his) mental sanity."
