A classic like "Miracle on 34th Street" is as much with the holiday season as cookies and milk for Santa on Christmas Eve. 1947's version stars a young Natalie Wood as Susan Walker, Doris Walker as Mo Lynn O'Hara, and Edmund Gwen as Academy Award-winning Kris Kringle in this not-to-be-missed Christmas movie.

When Doris discovers that the Santa she hired for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is drunk, she hires another man to take his place. This man not only calls himself Kris Kringle, but also claims to be the real Santa Claus. He charms everyone around him, including her young daughter Susan. Confrontations erupt, Kringle's own mental state is threatened, and eventually he faces a bizarre trial. The film is at the heart of the Christmas season and is wonderful for family viewing.

In "Scrooged," a modern adaptation of the 1843 novel A Christmas Story, Bill Murray plays Frank Cross, a rich but miserably successful television executive. He doesn't care about Christmas, demands to work during the vacations, and fires people just because they disagree with him. All that changes when his dead former boss appears before him and threatens to change his ways or he will be fired.

Cross ignores the warning until he is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. Soon, Frank Cross, played by Murray, begins to realize the error of his ways, introducing a bit of sentimentality into the film. The dark humor is perfectly balanced with the film's touching message. Marley's comedy and his chemistry with Carol Kane as the Ghost of Christmas Present are the reasons for the film's longstanding following.

Speaking of "A Christmas Story," "The Man Who Invented Christmas" offers a fictionalized and somewhat fantastical take on Charles Dickens' famous Christmas novel creation. Lead actor Dan Stevens plays a prominent writer at a time when success seems distant and he is struggling to make ends meet. Meanwhile, his estranged parents move in with him and his family, further complicating matters.

Determined to turn things around, however, he decides to write a Christmas novel in short order. While writing this book, he discusses with his character Scrooge and navigates his relationship with his father. He tells the story behind the classic tale in a unique way, including some interesting stories you may not have known about the author before.

There are several movies that are perfect for Christmas, and "It's a Wonderful Life" is one of them. George Bailey, starring James Stewart. He is a businessman with dreams of travel and a giving heart for those around him. You wouldn't think he has any enemies, except he does: Lionel Barrymore plays Mr. Potter, an evil banker who wants the whole town for himself.

When George loses the bank's money, he finds himself about to be arrested. He is determined to take his own life and becomes depressed, wishing he had never been born. Then Clarence, played by Henry Travers, shows up to help George, who hopes to one day get his wings. Clarence tells George exactly what he would have done if he had not been in this world. The film has the perfect blend of magic, courage, and self-sacrifice to make it a Christmas classic. I would watch it with a box of tissues.
