One of the best things about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is its new, larger cover display. Its 3.4-inch screen provides access to widgets and selected apps, allowing you to do more without ever having to flip the phone. But the Galaxy Z Flip 6 seems likely to take it a step further.
Display analyst Ross Young claims that Samsung will again increase the size of the Z Flip 6 cover display. Apparently, this model will have a 3.9-inch external display, which is quite huge for a cover display. This is 0.5" larger than the Z Flip 5's exterior screen and 0.3" larger than the Motorola Razr+'s.
Young also claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will also have a larger cover display than the Z Fold 5, but does not provide any additional details. Apparently we will have to wait for the upcoming DSCC report for all the juicy details. [We have already heard rumors that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 will have a refreshed design, including a larger cover display. Obviously Samsung could have pinched some ideas from the Google Pixel Fold and offered a slightly wider foldable. Given that we found the Pixel Fold more comfortable to use than Samsung's narrower style, this can only be a good thing.
Assuming the Z Fold 6 remains the same height as the Z Fold 5, its extra width may provide a significant amount of extra screen space. At this point, however, it is unclear how much larger the Z Fold 6 will actually be.
In both cases, a larger display means more opportunities to use the phone without flipping it. This is one thing that models like the Moto Razr+ and Z Flip 5 do quite well. However, I do wish Samsung would be a bit more open to letting apps run on the cover display without the need for special widgets or some sort of workaround.
We'll probably find out more in the coming months, but since Samsung's new series of foldable won't be available until the end of summer 2024, it will have to wait a bit. In the meantime, the Samsung Galaxy S24 is still on the way.
