Microsoft used a Surface Pro 7 commercial during Sunday's NFL Championship game to take a shot at the MacBook Pro. The ad, a sort of backhanded take on the "I'm a Mac" commercials of the mid-to-late 2000s, complained about Apple's hesitancy to include touchscreens on its laptops.
The ad specifically pursues Apple's touch bar, with an actor in the ad exclaiming, "Why won't they give me a whole touch screen?"
We suspect it's because Apple wants you to buy an iPad.
Unfortunately for Surface, this ad has a high hate rate on YouTube. It seems Apple fans are not too happy with being abused by Microsoft. Sadly, the comments have also been disabled, so you won't be able to read MacBook fans fighting back against the laptop maker that made fun of them.
As for the MacBook Pro's touch bar, rumors are beginning to circulate that the company plans to discontinue this sleek OLED display. If true, this would confirm that consumers have not found much use for the touch bar.
Oddly enough, Microsoft's ads claim that the Surface Pro is a better gaming device than the MacBook Pro, although this may be true on paper since Windows has a much larger gaming library than MacOS, it is dishonest to hold up the Surface as a gaming device.
The current Surface Pro 7 uses a 10th generation Intel Core processor. The integrated Intel UHD graphics are far from a gaming powerhouse. According to our sister publication Laptop Mag, the 10th generation UHD graphics can barely run seven-year-old games like Grand Theft Auto V. But to get a sense of its true value, you have to try your hand at it.
Of course, Microsoft also has a price advantage: the MacBook Pro costs $1,299, and the Core i5 Surface (with keyboard and pen) starts at $890. However, the MacBook Pro has Apple's new M1 chip.
