The new Spider-Man movie (called "Spider-Man 3" for lack of an official title) is expected to feature as many Spider-Men as its title suggests. The third chapter in Tom Holland's Spider-Man series is shaping up to be a very engaging one.
The follow-up to Spider-Man: Far From Home will continue the trend of tying in with other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. And it also appears to open up many more universe opportunities as well.
The big story of "Spider-Man 3" is the return of old faces to the MCU, with The Hollywood Reporter reporting that Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx will reprise their roles as Doctor Octopus and Electro.
This has led to speculation that Thomas Haden Church and Willem Durfor will reprise their roles as Sandman and Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, and that Jared Leto's Morbius will also appear. Those who know how to count will know that we are only one person away from Sinister Six at this point.
But when we learned that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would return as their respective versions of Peter Parker, our spider-sense was in full tingle. Rumors then surfaced that Christine Dunst would return as Mary Jane Watson and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.
It all made a little more sense when MCU head Kevin Feige revealed at a Disney Investors Day event in December 2020 that a new Doctor Strange film would lead to a Spider-Man sequel. This means that it will likely be a multiverse, with different Spider-Men appearing at the same time, as anyone who has seen "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" will agree.
The returning cast includes:
The new "Spider-Man" is scheduled for release on December 17, 2021. Nevertheless, this date could be pushed back if theaters are not ready to reopen due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A film of this size will probably not hit streaming services before its theatrical release, and this is not a Warner Bros. film.
Reportedly, Sony Pictures may be holding the trailer for Spider-Man 3.
Why wait? Perhaps they need Tobey Maguire to sign on the dotted line. In other words, the trailer is always available.
And if all the casting news above is correct, we really want to see this trailer.
