Google Search just got the biggest upgrade in a year - and it saves you tons of time

Google Search is getting a major upgrade that promises to make it easier to get the information you are searching for at a glance.

Google is currently testing a user interface change that will automatically show preview text and, if available, image previews when you hover over a search result. This means that users can get more information at a glance without having to click on a new tab or web page.

It may seem like a small upgrade, but it is definitely a very powerful one. Given the myriad of search results that Google displays for even the most niche topics, there are times when you just want to get a snapshot of what a web page contains. However, the short block of text that appears at the bottom of the search results is often not enough; you need to click on a link or open it in a new tab.

This is time-consuming and resource-intensive for laptops and desktops, and the Google Chrome browser is notorious for being a memory hog when many tabs are open, especially if the opened web page contains many ads or images. It is notorious for consuming a lot of memory when you have a lot of tabs open, especially if the web page you open has a lot of ads and images. However, being able to automatically preview more text and images simply by hovering over a search result would effectively overcome this problem, making the UI tweaks a much bigger upgrade than they appear.

Several people on the Tom's Guide team are seeing the UI upgrade in action, but it has not yet been rolled out to everyone. People have already posted that they have seen the new preview features; on Twitter, Ishan Agarwal showed the new UI in action, noting that while he likes it, some may find it annoying.

However, it is not clear if Google will really roll out the UI upgrade to all search users. And even if they do, it may take some time for the changes to be rolled out to everyone.
