The PS5 has an 825 GB SSD and the Xbox Series X has a 1 TB SSD, which is why the 64 GB iPhone 11 has only 56.5 GB after accounting for iOS.
The usable capacity of the Xbox Series X has already been revealed to be 802 GB, while thanks to a leak via the ResetEra forum, the PS5 has a usable capacity of 664 GB.
Assuming that the blue icon means "applications" as on the PS4, it also suggests that the bundled Astro's Playroom has a capacity of only 2.38 GB.
A warning before proceeding. This is a screenshot posted on a forum and may be where it came from. There is no guarantee that it is authentic, but since the PS5 development kit has been available for some time and the size of the OS seems likely enough, we will give it the benefit of the doubt. Nevertheless, we won't know for sure until we have a review unit in hand (or at least until Sony's approved specifications surface).
Now, assuming that is accurate and that the PS5 will have 664 GB of usable storage, will that be enough? That probably depends on how you intend to use it; if our hypothesis about 2.38 GB of "Astro's Playroom" is correct, it would prove that not all PS5 games need to occupy 50 to 100 gigabytes at a time.
On the other hand, it is clear that many games do. Looking at launch titles alone, the "Demon's Souls" remake requires 66 GB, while "Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Launch Edition" requires 105 GB.
Yes, the Xbox Series X and PS5 games allow you to choose which bits to install, but the space it saves is limited. Fancy new compression techniques may alleviate some of this, but it is still clear that software install capacity is going in one direction.
If there's anything we've learned from past consoles, it's that the amount of storage at launch always ultimately proves inadequate: the Xbox 360 came with a 20GB hard drive, and by the end of the generation a model with a 250GB drive was released. Similarly, the original PS4 came with 500 GB of storage, while newer models come with 1 TB.
As SSD prices come down, Microsoft and Sony will likely respond with new Series X and PS5 models. Early adopters may want to purchase an external storage drive for the PS5.
