PS5 developers reveal Killer new features for Spiderman, Ratchet & Crank and more

A few weeks ago, we learned how the PS5's dual-sense controller would enhance certain games, such as sensing the location of enemies in "Spider-Man: Miles Morales" and lowering the barrel of a dual shotgun in "Ratchet & Clank": Rift Apart Rift Apart And now a handful of developers are once again digging deep into two key PS5 features: the console's fast SSD and innovative 3D audio.

Just as DualSense makes games more immersive with touch controls, SSDs make games more immersive with speed controls, and 3D audio makes games more immersive with sound controls. Information from the official PlayStation Blog by Mary Yee, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

"From the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback of the DualSense wireless controller, to the ultra-fast SSD, to the immersion felt with the Tempest 3D AudioTech engine, we want players to be immersed in every PS5 game," Yee wrote.

The post surveys a variety of developers about SSD and 3D audio technology; some, like the DualSense post, give specific and useful examples, while others give vague "the future of gaming is here" answers. Still, it is instructive to see what the PS5 will offer gamers besides better graphics.

As for SSDs, Brian Horton, creative director of "Spider-Man: Miles Morales," praised the hardware's speed: "The PS5's SSD not only loads levels faster, but also handles textures and assets.

"This should make the city look better than ever." This is a fundamental change and I can't wait to be able to take advantage of it more in the coming years."

Gavin Moore, creative director of the "Demon's Souls" remaster, added that the SSD will significantly reduce the time between dying and reloading, which is key in the ultra-tough From Software games.

"The speed of SSDs allows us to load data at blazing speeds, bringing players back into the action and rewarding them with more deaths.

Marcus Smith, creative director of Insomniac Games, also reiterated what we learned about "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" at Gamescom.

"The SSD and the custom I/O architecture around it allows us to send players across dimensions at near-instantaneous speeds," he said. Gamers will remember that last week, Ratchet & Clank crossed dimensions into a fully rendered world in a matter of seconds.

On the 3D audio front, most developers, including Mathijs de Jonge, creative director of Horizon Forbidden West, noted that location information makes a tangible difference in gameplay.

"It allows players to play with sounds that allow them to more easily locate the machines around them, which is great for situations where you find yourself surrounded or sneaking up on a machine," he said.

Jun Takeuchi, executive producer of "Resident Evil: Village," argued that 3D audio has genre-specific benefits and could make a big difference in Capcom's long-running horror series.

"It's almost as if 3D audio tech was created with horror games in mind," he said. 'Before, players had to invest a lot of time and money to get spatial audio. Now, they can just put on a headset and get the full 3D audio experience.

Jurjen Katsman, head of studios at Nixxes, the company that developed "Marvel's Avengers," explained.

"When Iron Man destroys a turret placed overhead, or when the Hulk takes on the enemies below with a roar, you want to hear the sounds coming from those directions. Simply importing the actual location of the audio into the PS5's 3D Audiotech engine can greatly enhance your sense of being in that world." "

As with DualSense, it is difficult to demonstrate the speed and 3D audio benefits of SSD with pre-recorded video footage. However, as the PS5's release date gets closer (and we don't know when), we hope to get a chance to try out these features in person.
