Specs for the Xbox Series S have leaked, revealing that the console will be less powerful than the Xbox Series X, but will target games at 1440p resolution at 60 frames per second
Tom Warren of The Verge, tweeted that the Xbox Series S will have 20 compute units. The Series S will have the same 8-core, 16-thread Zen 2 architecture CPU as the Series X, but the GPU will be less powerful, with 4 teraflops of graphics power compared to the Series X's 12 teraflops.
Given that the Xbox One X, currently the world's most powerful gaming console, has 6 teraflops of GPU power and 40 CUs, the Xbox Series S may seem quite underpowered in comparison. The Series S is also said to have 10 GB of video memory compared to the Xbox One X's 12 GB.
However, with its new Zen 2 CPU, RDNA 2 GPU architecture, and faster GDDR6 VRAM than the One X's GDDR5, the Xbox Series S may be a more powerful gaming console due to its more advanced hardware.
Also, targeting a 1440p resolution seems sensible for the Xbox Series S. This is because it can be up-mixed to a virtual 4K resolution using a technique called checkerboard rendering. This is something the PS4 Pro applies effectively in some of its newest games.
So if you have a 4K TV, you won't need to buy an Xbox Series X for 4K gaming. [For example, the Xbox Series S will be a digital-only machine without a Blu-ray drive and will be offered at a lower retail price than the Xbox Series X.
However, there is no word on the storage capacity that the Xbox Series S will have, except that it will have a PCIe 4,0 SSD.
The Xbox Series S is expected to be announced somewhere in August this year, but Microsoft has not mentioned a date for its next Xbox event. Nevertheless, based on the growing number of leaked information, it appears that the Xbox Series S will indeed make an appearance.
