Bugsnax gameplay, memes, songs, and everything else we know

"Bugsnax" is one of the strangest PS5 games I've ever seen. Considering it was introduced alongside games where you play as a stray cat or explore a big city as an astronaut, this is saying something.

What exactly Bugsnax is, I can't say, having just seen the two trailers. We do know that the central concept of the game is cute and tasty animals that are half bug, half snack food. The idea is that you play as a journalist in a world of colorful animated characters, collecting Bugsnax, solving puzzles, and enriching your collection.

In other words: think Pokemon Snap, but with a more bizarre sense of humor.

Bugsnax is probably one of those games that you have to play yourself to believe, but here's what we know for now.

When developer Young Horses revealed Bugsnax at the PS5 gaming event in June, we didn't really know what kind of title it would be; we knew that Bugsnax would feature catchy tunes and a cute world filled with offbeat characters but that was it. But thanks to the State of Play video Sony released on August 6, we now have a much better idea of what the gameplay of Bugsnax will be like. For more information, watch the trailer below:

The video is only about a minute and a half long, but it tells you what you need to know about how Bugsnax will be played. You control a journalist in a world full of exaggerated puppet-like characters, tasked with learning about the protagonist creature. To do this, you will use various traps, bait, photographs, and notes.

For example: in the trailer, the protagonist uses a strawberry-shaped Bugsnax (Bugsnack.) To lure the hamburger-shaped Bugsnax into a pen, he uses a slingshot with ketchup. To lure pasta-shaped Bugsnax out of their holes, a laser pointer and some environmental ingenuity are needed. The creatures collected are recorded in a notebook, and a map is consulted to find new locations.

Bugsnax seems to be part collecting, part exploration, part puzzle solving. There does not appear to be any combat, so it should be a fairly calm and lighthearted experience.

Perhaps one of the reasons Bugsnax has become so popular is that the entire game seems to be geared toward memes. What is odd about the memes in Bugsnax, however, is that there does not appear to be a single meme format that fits this game. Instead, Bugsnax itself seems to fit easily into existing meme forms, such as Gordon Ramsay criticizing the quality of Bugsnax's cooking or Wolverine caressing a picture of a giggly-eyed strawberry.

There seems to be no particular trick to creating a meme of Bugsnax. Just plug your favorite bugsnax creature into your favorite meme template and see if social media goes crazy for it. But it's not just the Bugsnax images that have the Internet going crazy. So did the game's unorthodox theme song.

If there is one reason why Bugsnax has become so popular, it is probably the game's incredibly catchy theme song. The song premiered in the game's first trailer:

If you can't get this snippet out of your head and want to hear more, the full version is called "It's Bugsnax." You can listen to the whole song below:

The song is incredibly catchy and is the game's weird and offbeat, cute but self-aware vibe of the game perfectly. If this is what the game's soundtrack is like, people will probably continue to listen to it regularly long after the game is over.

Bugsnax will be released for PS4, PS5, and PC at the end of 2020. Before then, we will almost certainly see another extremely rare gameplay video.

So far, this is pretty much all we know about Bugsnax. It is clearly a strange exploration/puzzle game with a quirky sense of humor. The game doesn't seem to be for everyone, but the target audience (whatever that may be) will probably really, really like it.
