Halo Infinite was finally properly introduced at Microsoft's Xbox 20/20 game showcase. And it will be released "Holiday 2020" at the same time as the Xbox Series X launch.
We knew it was coming, but until today Microsoft had never actually shown Halo Infinite in action. However, this new video gives us a glimpse of the gameplay as well as the cover art of Halo Infinite, which recalls the glory days of Halo Combat Evolved.
Microsoft did not elaborate much on the story of "Halo Infinite," but did show how the open environments and action of the original "Halo," "Halo 3" and "Halo Reach" are back. The demo showed Master Chief fighting classic enemies such as grunts, elites, and jackals, as well as brutes from "Halo 2" in a fairly open environment.
See the footage for yourself:
Master Chief confronts these enemies with classic Halo assault rifles, thrusts grenades at armored enemies, runs over enemies with the iconic Warthog Jeep, bounces around in wide open spaces and mixed enemy groups, flanking them, and everything in between.
Halo Infinite also adds several new features, most notably the grappling hook, which not only moves the Master Chief quickly to a higher position, but also allows him to grab a container of explosives and throw it at a dense enemy formation. It also allows the Spartan 117 to pull toward the enemy for a brutal melee attack. It will be interesting to see how this grappling hook will be used to navigate the supposedly pseudo-open world of "Halo."
One gets the impression that Master Chief does so by displaying a terrain map with markers for various targets and points of interest. One hopes that this will allow for a variety of ways to tackle missions and enemy encampments.
Speaking of Halo, Halo Infinite appears to take place on a damaged Halo ring where human UNSC forces were located prior to their disastrous defeat by the Bannished, a mixed group of alien races that split from the Covenant before the Covenant's defeat in Halo 3. Halo Wars 2 players will remember the Banished as an enemy faction led by a brute called Atriox.
Banished's leader was stuck in the Halo Wars 2 arc and therefore did not appear in the demo. However, it appears that another Brute leader with a fervent devotion to the Atriox will make an appearance and will be someone the Master Chief will need to deal with.
It remains to be seen how the end of "Halo 5: Guardians" will tie into "Halo Infinity". However, it is certain that there will be a Guardian army led by the AI Cortana.
Also, with the power of the Xbox Series X, "Halo Infinite" not only looks pretty good, but runs at a smooth 60 frames per second. For "Halo" fans, including ourselves, we can't wait for Holiday 2020, or November.
