PS5 has a killer feature to beat Xbox Series X - and it's beyond raw power

After Sony's deep presentation last week, we have a much better understanding of the fancy technology that powers the PS5, but we still don't see how the console's powerful guts will benefit players in the real world Kotaku's news editor and industry Thanks to a new account by Kotaku news editor and industry insider Jason Schreier, we may find one of the answers.

Schreier, posting on Resetera's forums (via TechRadar), has heard from developers that PS5 games should load very fast, and that the console should allow for quick sessions that allow for seamless in and out of titles. He stated that the console will be built to allow for quick sessions where titles can be moved in and out seamlessly.

"One of the things [Sony] is throwing at developers is, 'Playing PS5 games should be as easy as Netflix. ' They want players to feel like they can load the game right away and know exactly how long a certain activity will take. They want to inspire people to play in a short amount of time, rather than only wanting to turn on the console when they have a few hours to spare"

.

This feature seems to be in line with much of the recent tech buzz about Sony's game consoles, especially the 825GB solid state drive (SSD). During last week's technology announcement, PS5 system architect Mark Cerny said that the SSD will allow games to load incredibly fast and that in-game activities such as fast travel will be almost instantaneous rather than sticking the player behind a long loading screen

and that the game will be able to load faster than ever before.

This new report on Netflix-like immediacy is supported by an interview Sony gave to Wired in October 2019. In that interview, Cerny said that SSDs would allow players to install only the parts they need (e.g., only the single-player campaign), and that the user interface would allow players to play any mission in the game, join any friend instantly, and The user interface will provide information such as which missions players can play in the game, which friends they can instantly join, and so on, he stated. This goes along with Schreier's assertion that PS5 will "know exactly how long a certain activity will take."

While it is exciting that the PS5 will be able to render games at up to 8K resolution and deliver immersive graphics capabilities such as ray tracing, the real killer feature of the next generation console is the ability to join and leave games with the ease of use of a streaming service. The ability to step away from the game may prove to be the key, and we look forward to seeing how seamlessly the PS5 and Xbox Series X will accomplish this goal when they arrive in the holiday season of 2020.
