The PS5 was given a special custom water-cooling treatment thanks to Vietnamese modding channel Modding Cafe. In the world of custom gaming PCs, water cooling is used as an alternative to air cooling, often providing lower temperatures for critical hardware.
Modding Cafe has uploaded a video detailing the entire process, from disassembly to assembly to testing. It's a really fascinating video, especially for those who like videos about custom PC loops.
Water cooling allows for better heat transfer from the PS5's major components. It requires less overhead and is usually quieter than air cooling with traditional fans. Air cooling almost always requires a larger fan, which is part of what makes the PS5 so large.
Modding Cafe's custom solution looks out of this world, but at the same time seems to fit the PS5's aesthetic; fans of PC custom loops will recognize many of the design elements. And one of the coolest parts is that the modder plans to bring this to market in the future. However, it goes without saying that doing this to a PS5 will void the warranty.
When the water-cooled PS5 and the air-cooled PS5 are placed side by side, the former is clearly smaller. Toward the end of the video, Modding Cafe performs a thermal test; while they cannot directly measure the temperature of the APU and memory, they do measure the temperature of the water cooling and the back plate. The difference is obvious.
This quirky cooling solution has been joined by other PS5 customizations, such as dbrand, which makes custom faceplates for their consoles. Installing this water-cooling solution requires a bit of DIY know-how, but the video explains everything from disassembling the PS5 to installing the new parts.
No word at this time on when or how much it will be available.
