The next MacBook Pro 2021 is rumored to bring back much-needed ports, but you won't have to splurge for them if you invest in this new hub Satechi has announced the ultimate USB-C hub, which will significantly upgrade the current MacBook Pro and iPad Pro's
This hub will be a major upgrade to the meager ports on the current MacBook Pro and iPad Pro.
The hub includes HDMI and VGA outputs for video, Ethernet data, USB, SD, and Micro SD card support. A key feature is the USB-C PD pass-through capability, which allows for up to 100W of charging.
The Satechi USB-C On-The-Go Multiport Adapter is a rugged accessory for MacBooks and iPads; it costs $100, measures 4.7 x 2.4 inches, and weighs 4.4 oz. Of course, it will fit in a backpack or messenger bag, but it might stick out a bit.
Regardless, productivity-minded Apple users will choose this device for its depth of connectivity: the HDMI port supports up to 4K 60Hz output, ideal for users who want to connect to a high-resolution monitor for video or photo editing. Interestingly, there is also a VGA port capable of 1080p 60Hz output. Considering that displays have long since moved from VGA to HDMI and DisplayPort, it is curious that this analog input is included.
USB-C PD charging up to 100W means that this hub can charge multiple devices. However, it requires an adequate 7-10W power brick. In any case, a charger can be connected to this hub while using a MacBook Pro to provide fast charging to devices such as iPhones and iPads.
As Apple continues to remove ports from its devices, users are forced to purchase third-party dongles and accessories. Fortunately, MacBook Pro 2021 rumors suggest that Apple will bring back HDMI and SD card support on this year's MacBook Pro. However, this new hub will bring even more connectivity options.
Compared to other similar hubs like Anker and Hyper, Satechi's hub offers a similar feature set. The main difference is that Satechi requires only one USB-C connection; Anker and Hyper's hubs have a flush finish and can be embedded into the side of a MacBook Pro. However, these hubs do not have VGA.
