Until Matter takes hold, few smart home devices will work with HomeKit. That's why we were pleased to see Eve's new Outdoor Cam, the second outdoor security camera to support Apple's HomeKit Secure Video.
Available in April for $250, this 1080p camera connects to your iCloud account and stores encrypted video. It can also use the existing on-device intelligence of Apple TV and HomePod to detect and automatically record any movement and differentiate between people, pets, cars, and luggage. If you already own many Apple products, the convenience of this compatibility is definitely a bonus.
The Eve Outdoor Cam features a 1080p sensor with a 157-degree field of view, two-way communication, infrared motion detection, and night vision; its IP55 certification allows it to withstand the elements and is not as obtrusive as other models on the market. The light is integrated into the same body as the camera, making it compact and sleek. However, the light cannot be pointed at a specific location separately from the camera.
At $250 (available in April), the Eve Outdoor Cam is comparable in price to other outdoor floodlights such as the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight Camera. However, the Eve device must be wired and requires an iCloud+ account (starting at 99 cents/month for 50GB of storage) to use the HomeKit Secure Video feature. This means, unfortunately, that you can't rely on free iCloud storage.
We'd love to see if it makes our list of best home security cameras.
