Toshiba M-Series has introduced new Fire TVs for the holiday season, starting with the Toshiba M550KU LED 4K UHD Smart Fire TV. This is the first Amazon smart TV to feature 48 individual dimming zones for HDR performance.
The new M-Series follows Toshiba's popular Toshiba C350 Fire TV, which is our favorite as the best Fire TV model and features heavily on our list of best TVs under $500. The new Toshiba M-Series TVs will be available this month at Best Buy and Amazon.
In addition to an array of dimming zones, Toshiba's new M-Series is also one of the first products to offer hands-free voice interaction, a feature that has been sorely lacking on previous Fire TVs. This feature has only been available on the newest Amazon Omni Fire TV models, but will likely be available on all of the more premium Fire TV models in the future.
With Alexa built in, users can turn on the TV, adjust the volume, select their favorite apps and programs, and search for new content without having to reach for the remote control. The device's embedded long-range microphone allows the TV to be used as a smart speaker, controlling not only the TV but also smart home devices and Alexa skills just like Amazon Echo.
Amazon's Omni Fire TV boasted Dolby Vision HDR support, but in our testing and review of this set, we were a bit disappointed with the HDR performance. The lack of local dimming limited what the TV could do with any HDR format, and we felt that the promise of Dolby Vision on the Omni series was not fulfilled. We hope that Toshiba's new M series will deliver where the Omni failed to do so.
In addition to local dimming and hands-free voice interaction, Toshiba has enhanced the M Series with a sleek narrow bezel design, more flash memory for faster performance, and improved display brightness and color quality.
The Toshiba M-Series Smart Fire TVs will be available this month and come in three sizes: 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch; the 55-inch will sell for $799, the 65-inch for $999, and the largest 75-inch model for $1199.
