When we review devices, charging speed with the included charger is one of the test items: the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro are two of the fastest charging speeds, taking about 30 minutes from flat to fully charged thanks to the included 65W Warp charger.
But if one leaker is to be believed, the OnePlus 10 Pro has been upgraded to 125W charging and appears to leave its predecessors firmly in the dust.
Mukul Sharma, a tipster known for his OnePlus leaks, has released a list of devices that will supposedly feature 125W charging, including the OnePlus 10 Pro as well as devices from Realme and Oppo.
To be clear, a charger with nearly twice the wattage does not mean twice the charging speed. In fact, OnePlus is likely using the 125W flash charge technology that Oppo announced last year. If so, Oppo promised it would take 20 minutes to charge a 4000mAh battery. And assuming that the OnePlus 10 Pro will have the same 4,500 mAh cells as the OnePlus 9 Pro, that would likely mean a charge time between 20 and 25 minutes. [One might quite question whether a 5 to 10 minute reduction is worth the upgrade, especially since faster charging could also shorten battery life.
Oppo told Android Authority that a 125W flash charge will "maintain" battery capacity at 80% after 800 full charge/discharge cycles. Of course, this was a year ago, and the technology may have been refined and improved since then. However, given the limited improvement in actual charge times, this is still a concern.
This is not to say, of course, that manufacturers should stay away from fast chargers. Anyone who has had to deal with the painfully slow charging of the otherwise wonderful Google Pixel 6 Pro will know that speedy charging can be an absolute godsend when in a hurry. But the difference between 65W and 125W may prove to be an unnecessary step for most people.
