Update: A new teaser trailer for Starfield suggests the game will be a cross between Skyrim and The Expanse.
It may be eight months before we see actual game footage of Starfield, the highly anticipated sci-fi game from Skyrim developer Bethesda.
According to Todd Howard, director of Bethesda Game Studios, he said in a Reddit ask-me-anything thread that rather than promote specific game elements, Bethesda wants people to see the game in action. 'We just prefer to show it, and that should be next summer,' Howard said. 'You can see some of that in the trailer that was filmed in the game.'
Next summer probably means E3 2022, which will be held next June. This is because Bethesda has held conferences at Game Expo before, and last year they co-hosted one with new owner Microsoft, which was reportedly a huge success.
In a way, it is quite late in the year to show off game footage of Starfield, which is scheduled for release on November 11, 2022. However, one gets the impression that Bethesda wants to show off "Starfield" only when they know they have a fairly complete game on their hands. [I remember the first gameplay reveal trailer for "Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" was a very polished selection of game footage, punctuated by a huge soundtrack. One would expect Bethesda to do the same with "Starfield," only with a more sci-fi soundtrack rather than a philharmonic fantasy soundtrack.
Since "Starfield" will most likely have the exploratory DNA of "Skyrim" in abundance, I would not be surprised if the release of "Starfield," arguably Bethesda's biggest title until "The Elder Scrolls 6" comes out, follows in the footsteps of "Skyrim" I wouldn't be surprised if it follows in the footsteps of "Skyrim.
Speaking of similarities to "Skyrim," Howard also noted that "Starfield" will have full mod support: "Our plan is to offer full mod support like our previous games. Our mod community has been with us for 20 years. We love what they do and we want more people to work on it."
This is very good news, considering that "Skyrim" is still very playable 10 years after its launch on November 11, 2011, thanks to mod support. Of course, "Starfield" will be an "exclusive" title for the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC, which will be very much anticipated.
